[Opinions] Wendy
I've fallen in love with Wendy lately. I think it's very cute and lively. Do you think it could stand alone as a full name? I know people often use Gwendolyn/Gwendolen as a formal version, but my husband made retching noises when I suggested it to him. I think he'd go for Wendy, though, because of its simplicity. Opinions? Thoughts?
Oh, one more thing: do you think it's dated? The Wendys I've known have been middle-aged, so I'm worried it might come across as dated. Thanks!

It sounds young and happy, and I don't think it was ever popular enough to be associated forever with a particular age group.
All the Wendys I've known have had it as a stand-alone name, and all the Gwendolens have used Gwen as a nn.

I have always liked Wendy and all the Wendys that I have ever known (all in their 60s) its usually their full name, not their nickname, so I think it could definitely work as an independent name.
I've never cared for this name and I'm not sure why. It seems like my "style" but I've never warmed up to it. There were Wendys my age but I've never heard of a child named Wendy since the 70's. That doesn't mean they're not out there and I do think it would be very refreshing to hear the name again.
I have known only two people named Wendy (one early 20's, the other middle aged), and yet there must be some air of datedness about it, because it does seem like a rather threadbare name to me. I love the literary tie, but now people think more about Hamburgers than Peter Pan when they hear this name I fear.
I think the Wendys I knew did have it as a full name, so I rather like the idea of it being a nickname for something else.
If you like the energy of Wendy but your husband hates it (that's always a bummer to deal with), what about:
Maisie
Daisy
Shelby
Trilby
Cecily
Avery
Lucy
Gelsey
???

I know he'd like Lucy, because that's his mother's name. I'll bounce it off him some time. :)
Wendy is fine on its own, I don't see it dated at all. I have an Aunt Wendi and that has gone good for her. Wendy is a lovely name.
Very cute, reminds me of Peter Pan. I also like the name Windy, like that song 'everyone knows it's Windy'...
I have been a fan of Wendy. Maybe your husband would go for Morwenna though?
It does sound dated to me.

Thanks for the suggestion, but there's no way he would go for Morwenna. His style is more Heather/Jennifer/Olivia/Hannah, if you know what I mean. :)
It is dated, and I strongly dislike it, but I think that it can stand on its own. From what I've read, it didn't start as a nickname for Gwendolyn. J.M. Barrie coined the name for "Peter Pan", based upon a phrase he had heard a child use: "Friendy Wendy."
I think it might be refreshing to see some new Wendy's in this generation. I love the name very much. But for some reason I feel like I'd go with Gwendolen just because I'm a sucker for longer names ;)
But Wendy can definitely stand on it's own, it was my aunts name, and with her and the name I have only good associations.
