Could anyone explain me the origin of german surname Kreten?

I don't know what it means, but it's a Croatian word for a jerk.

I hope it's a misspeling because in my language it means "cretin" or idiot pr lunatic

There is also a surname, Kreiten, and both it and Kreten appear to be based in the Rhineland. Maybe they are versions of the same name. Unfortunately neither name seems to have attracted the attention of students of surnames (maybe Andy knows better). There is also a German surname, Kreit, which is a word that means "quarrel". No firm conclusions to be drawn from any of this.
