[Opinions] Wilhelmina
Hello! I haven't been to this board in ages, although I used to post all the time under the name Julie, years ago.The name Wilhelmina has been on my mind a lot lately. I used to hate it, it looks so clunky. But the sound is so pretty and airy: Willa-mina. Lots of good nickname potential, too: Willa, Mina, Billie, Minnie. My two kids are named Alice and Wesley. Although I'm not expecting, I do wonder how the names match up. Wesley and Alice are very simple names, and Wilhelmina is a lot more complicated. And then there is the two W name thing. Thoughts?

I don't mind it. I think Willa is a nice nn.

I freaking love Wilhelmina! It's always been a love of mine. I love the NN Winnie. I'll use it in a heartbeat if my future husband lets me:)I think Wilhelmina and Alice go nicely together. Wesley is a bit different in style but I see no reason why they can't be used together!!I'd probably get all weak in the knees if I meat a little Wilhelmina!

Oooh, thanks for your enthusiasm! I'd forgotten about Winnie. Which makes me wonder then if Wendy could be an acceptable nickname. I loooove Wendy.

Wilhelmina's lovely! I currently prefer Willa.

Thanks! Willa is also very pretty. It does feel like it's edging up in popularity, although that might only be on name boards.

Yeah, Wilhelmina really doesn't complement the other two at all. It is also a pet peeve of mine when parents repeat first initials with their children, so I'd go ahead and pick something else.

I agree that it's annoying when parents repeat letters, but it's more annoying to me when they do it on purpose, choosing names solely because they fit the purpose and not because they love them.I will say, though, that we seriously considered naming Alice "Gwendolen" and calling her Wendy, but ultimately didn't do that because I thought Wendy and Wesley was just too cutesy-cute.

Wilhelmina is wonderful, no matter what the other children's names are. It's more important to me that each child has a name that will serve them well throughout their individual lives than in how well their names match each other. The kids take over the names anyway. If you name a 3rd child Googoo Doll, she'd still fit right in. Alice / Alix is my favorite mn for Wilhelmina, so right there you're already ahead of the game. :-)Wilhelmina Iris

Thank you for the welcome, Bear! Your screen name sounds familiar to me. I was here when we were choosing Wesley's name, although at the time we were seriously considering the name Jasper. I love Wilhelmina Mary! So sweet. I also like Mary Wilhelmina, so that would take care of any clashing issues. I also really like Wilhelmina Phoebe.

OoohMary Wilhelmina is great. My grandmother was Alice Mary, so I'd love to think there were sisters with these names running about. Wesley, Alice and Mae?

I like Wilhelmina a lot too, but not as a sister for Alice and Wesley, both because of the complicated vs simple issue and the matching W. Would you be willing to use Mina as a standalone name? "Alice, Wesley, and Mina" is darling.

Mina is really cute, but I don't love it enough to edge out other names that I love more.

I really like Wilhelmina too. I love the sound. But the look written down ... I don't know if I could actually use it.I do love the idea of Wilhelmina or even just Willa as a middle name with something a little simpler up front, and in that case the two Ws/does it match issue wouldn't matter anyway.

I know, written down it's so clunky looking. And I think that people have a tendency to say "Will-hell-mina" which is decidedly ugly.

You could always shorten Wilhelmina to Willie or Minnie. I think Wesley, Alice, and Minnie make an adorable sibset.

Minnie does sound so sweet and early 1900s with Wesley and Alice.
