It is now 1930.
What happened in 1926:
Adam and Samantha adopt a young orphan boy who comes through their neighborhood looking for food. His name is Joey, and he can't remember ever not being an orphan. Eddy and Stephen like having another boy in the house their age to play with. Adam and Samantha are helping Joey adjust to life with a family, but he is doing okay. Ben and Rebecca's first child, a daughter named Charlotte Marie, was born on March 18th. She is healthy, and Rebecca loves taking care of her daughter. Lou likes having another grandchild so close to spoil. Mike is in his third year of medical school, and he is learning so much. He can't wait to start practicing. Henry and Summer Groves got married in the summer after a whirlwind romance. Hopefully they're right for each other. Henry works at the police department, and Summer is waitressing at the Ash Hill Diner to make some extra money. Henry isn't sure that he likes Summer working, but she promises to stay home once they have children. Hope is busy taking care of Charlie and going to school. Despite her best efforts, she has fallen a bit behind her classmates. Stephen is growing up quickly. He hasn't decided what he'd like to do yet.
What happened in 1927:
Lou gets sick with an unknown ailment. She is often very tired and is becoming uncoordinated. She also suffers from massive migraine headaches that last for days. Edward has hired an assistant at the newspaper so that he can stay home with Lou whenever she needs help. Adam and Samantha are still living in Washington, DC. Adam has recently taken time off, however, so that he and his family could come and visit his parents. The kids are enjoying seeing their grandparents, even if Lou isn't in the best of health. Adam's family is living with Ben and Rebecca for now, but they have plans to go back to Washington in a few weeks. Ben and Rebecca are doing well. The farm is thriving, and Lottie is growing into a lovely little girl. Mike has one year of medical school left before he becomes a resident. He has also met a girl that he really likes. Her name is Nellie Fisher. Henry and Summer are also doing well. They have not had any children yet, but Henry is hopeful that they will have a baby soon. Hope has dropped out of school to help take care of her mother and Charlie full-time. Stephen doesn't know what is wrong with Lou, but he wants it to stop so that he can have his mother back.
What happened in 1928:
Lou is still sick. Edward has been taking her to several doctors, but they can't figure out what is wrong. Most doctors agree that there is something in the brain, but they can't find it. The whole family is very worried, but Lou tries to stay optomistic. Adam and Samantha have plans to move back to Ash Hill, and Adam is planning to take over the newspaper. Ben and Rebecca are excitedly awaiting the birth of their second child. Lottie is two now, and she is also excited about the prospect of a new sibling. Mike has graduated from medical school at last, and is doing his residency in New York City. He has made frequent trips home to see Lou and Edward. Henry and Summer still have not had any children, but they saved up enough money to build their own home on the edge of Ben and Rebecca's property. Hope is very busy helping to take care of Lou and raising Charlie and Stephen at the same time. She was completely surprised when a boy from school, Henry Evans, wanted to date her. She said yes, but that her family came first. They are taking things slowly, but Hope is wishing for the best.
What happened in 1929:
Lou passed away on August 16th. She went to sleep, and Edward couldn't wake her up the next morning. The entire family was devastated by the loss of their matriarch, but they are slowly putting the pieces back together. Edward plans on returning to help Adam with the newspaper, which is growing rapidly. Adam and Samantha welcomed a little girl six weeks after Lou's death. They were surprised to be having a baby, but the older kids were all excited, and it helped take their minds off of their grandmother's death. Ben and Rebecca had their second daughter early in the year. Lottie loves her new playmate, and Ben is happy to see that his mother got to see his daughter before she died. Mike's residency in New York City is going well. He has another couple of years there before he can open his own practice. He came home for Lou's funeral, but has been very quiet about the whole event. Edward doesn't know how he's feeling. He hopes that he is at least confiding in some of his colleagues. Henry and Summer found out that they were expecting their first child in the fall. They are excited about the arrival of a summer baby. Hope is still courting Henry Evans. She doesn't want to commit to him just yet. She and Charlie still live at home with her younger brother Stephen, and Hope doesn't want to leave him all alone to go and get married. Stephen has taken his mother's death hard. He is very sullen and withdrawn and angry at everyone. With news of a depression looming, the Halloway family has much bigger problems to worry about.
What happened in 1930:
Things started looking up for the Halloways in 1930, at least, for the most part. Edward is learning how to get along without Lou, and he is helping Stephen deal with his grief as well. Adam and Samantha have been busy with their seven children, but they are enjoying life. Ben and Rebecca are cherishing their daughters, and getting on pretty well at the farm, since they grow a lot of their own food. Mike has been hit hardest by the depression. He works at the hospital, but has recently taken a large pay cut and works longer hours seeing sicker and sicker patients. Edward is hoping that he doesn't work too hard. Henry and Summer welcomed their first child, a boy, born on July 8, 1930. They named him Henry Edward, after his father and grandfather. He is a very healthy little boy with a hearty set of lungs that he uses constantly. Hope and Henry recently announced their engagement. They plan to be married in 1931. Hope is very excited, as is her son, Charlie. Stephen is getting a little better, and he recently announced his plans to join the US Army when he turns 18.
