Earlier this year, Ethel came to Cammie's door, pregnant and crying, with four little boys clinging to her skirt and another in her arms. She explained that Numbers had been abusive toward her for years, and the only time he wouldn’t hurt her was when she was pregnant. Except, this time, he had hit her, despite her pregnancy. Ethel couldn’t live like that anymore, and had fled with her five sons, Ezra, Hollis, Levi, Skyler, and Jadon. A few months later, Ethel gave birth to her first daughter, Mary Eden Sarai Everhart. She calls her Eden. Numbers hasn’t come looking for her or the children yet…
Cammie didn’t scold Ethel when she let her move back in… after all, that wasn’t the first incident in the family of that kind…
A few years before, Helen had come to the door, only 17 and crying that she couldn’t be with John Thomas anymore. She had her screaming two year old in her arms. Cammie had taken them in as well. Within a year, John Thomas sent along divorce papers—he’d found someone else. Helen had been happy to sign them.
But things haven’t been all bad… Marguerite has a beautiful little daughter, Anna-Zen, and she and George seem perfectly happy together. And Rosalie, Evangeline, and Maude are all married now!
