Any thoughts? To me it seems like the classic boys names are getting less popular in favour for more 'exotic' names. Classic Scandinavian names seems to be popular for girls.

Very interesting!I like:
Livia
Elvira - bit of a GP
Freja - but prefer the Anglicised Freya
Charlie
Sofia - again prefer Sophia
Samuel
Alexander - one of my favourite names
LucasLilly (or Lily) seems to be popular everywhere at the moment! Molly and Nellie have a similar sort of sound as well. It's interesting that both Dante and Milton are increasing as they are both famous poets.

There are some interesting names here:Livia - Interesting that this is popular in Sweden.
Edith - I like Edith, but it's considered to be a rather old name in the US.
Molly - Ugh. This is such a dated name in America.
Elvira - Cool.
Nellie - Awesome!
Felicia - Very pretty and elegant.
Nova - I wonder why this has become popular. It's so ugly and heavy.Dante - Where did this name come from? I like it.
Milton - Ick. Such a nerdy name.
Wilmer - Ditto.
Loke - Is this related to Loki?
Vidar - Cool name. I've never heard it before.
Neo - Was this inspired by The Matrix?
Herman - Strange that this name is popular somewhere.
Otto - Hideous.Agnes - It's a shame that this is decreasing in popularity.
Jennifer - One of my least favorite names. It was waay overused in the US. I'm glad it's declining in Sweden.
Tindra - I've never heard this name before. What's it mean?
Cornelia - Wow, this name was popular in Sweden?
Tova - Another ugly heavy name.Hampus - How could this come from Hans? It sounds like "hamper".
Pontus - What a bizarre, not very attractive name.
Tim - Doesn't work as a full name.
Samuel - This is a nice classic name, shame it's declining.
Daniel - Ditto.
Gabriel - See Daniel and Samuel.
Lucas - I hate this name. It just feels trendy.

Loke = Loki.
Tindra means sparkle in Swedish.

"Exotic" means American crap.I swear, if I see one more continental European couple using an English name that doesn't exist in their culture on their innocent child, I would like to kill myself. To all non-English-speaking Europeans: Get over names like Kevin and Liam and use REAL European names. Look at your name day calendars or older name books (i.e. without the foreign crap) to see what you can use. Even a name that EXISTS in your country, like Ester or Lukas, is better than a name like Kevin or Jessica. Learn that modern English names (names like Madycynne and Khaedyn) lack class. And all the nice (i.e. lesser-used, not cliche) English names like Leona and Richard are found only on old people nowadays (you'll notice it especially with the women). And now, Americans are using foreign names without knowing the real meanings. Would I name my child Zuleika, Aydin, Florian, or Yukiko? As nice as they sound, I wouldn't because I am a monolingual English-speaking American.Knowing that no children in Sweden have Swedish names, no children in Germany have German names, or that no children in France have French names makes me want to barf. The only Europeans still using THEIR OWN names are (get ready to cringe) the Moroccan, Pakistani, Turkish, and Somali immigrants, none of whom belong in Europe anyway due to their prudishness and intolerance.

You're just a little kid, going througn puberty, so mayhaps this is just you spewing out hormonal hate.
You make the rest of us Americans look like jerks, and you're obviously uneducated or you'd realize that America, your country of residence idealizes what you're trashing.
Without the rest of the world, mostly Europe, the country that you live in and make to look horrible wouldn't exist.
Thanks for reinforcing the international opinion of the "ugly american", that we're disgusting bigoted pigs.
Oh, and about your comment down there, "I just think it's not fair that Muslims kill Jews. Europe isn't like the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, or Argentina. They're not supposed to be nations of immigrants. "
Everyone killed the jews for awhile, and even in the US, for a VERY VERY long time they had exceptionally difficult lives.
And Australia, as well as the Americas are exactly what you don't want them to be, nations of Immigrants. They were all, just like us here in the US, repopulated by Europeans, often at the destruction of the natives and their cultures. (No offense meant to modern Europeans, people just went about things differently then)
vote up1
Oh, please.Get over yourself. I bet anything you spent a few semesters at college, learned some things about European immigration, distorted the facts to suit your own bigoted viewpoint, and don't have the guts to express these opinions to anyone except us, people you can't see or hear. Bravo. Give yourself a little pat on the back.People like you are (unfortunately) a dime a dozen.
vote up1
You are a disgraceful excuse for a human being.Just leave, ffs.

=] agreed!

*headdesk* (language warning)Don't you realize how bigoted you are? That now explains the other obnoxious Muslim-related post on the Lounge. FYI: I'm Italian, and 90% of Italians use Italian names! And most of the German, French, ettc. people I know use names belonging to their nationalities. Where the heck do you get that kind of information!I can't really qualify your statement on immigrants in Europe. You're not even European, what the fuck do you know about Europe and if immigrants belong there or not? Most immigrants make efforts to integrate, how can you make anyway these huge generalizations about their prudishness and intollerance? Go get an education, you ignorant and bigotted idiot!
vote up1
OMGI'm European, you're racist.
We can use whatever names we like.

It may seem unnecessary to post yet another highly disapproving and angry message, given how many before me have done so. However, since I'm the one who is most easily and most frequently aroused to anger by similar sentiments in Loxandra, I'm going to post in the interest of not appearing biased.I highly disapprove of, and disagree with, the opinions you have expressed here. You're aware that I PM'd you, and expressed my belief that you should be forgiven for your past mistake and given a second chance. You've disappointed me.
vote up1
Speaking as a non-English-speaking European, PLEASE do kill yourself!
vote up1
I am EuropeanAnd I wish you would stop telling everyone from my continent how we should live our lives. It's none of your business and you clearly don't know what you are talking about anyway. As I have told you before, Kevin and Jessica aren't American names. There is no reason why someone in Europe (which is made up of several unique countries, it is not just one entity) shouldn't use those names anymore than someone in America should. Why don't Americans just stick to using "American" names like Dakota or made up crap like McMadison?!You are not just a "monolingual English speaking American" you are a narrowminded, bigoted, racist American. As for your comments about immigration in Europe and Muslims in general you really are very ignorant. I'm not going to repeat what I said about Muslims in my previous post a few weeks ago. You obviously don't read anyone's responses. I am not an authority on all European countries but I do know that many of the immigrants in Britain are here because they are allowed to be and many were specifically invited by our government for a number of different reasons. Please go ahead and kill yourself. It wouldn't bother me. And it would save the rest of us from having to read your rubbish. Hopefully you will be banned from this board before that happens anyway.

"I swear, if I see one more...""...I would like to kill myself."
Don't make me say it.

There's another narrow-minded, disrespectful comment out of youI never say things like this, but I have just had enough of this crap. *shakes head*

Ditto, all the way. It's really insulting, anyway. I'm not going to waste my time thinking of ways to oppose this bitter comment of yours.

lolwut?I live in Germany and it's true that a lot of people nowadays give their children names from different cultures, but that trend is actually declining. The big in thing right now are apparently Biblical names like Noah and Elias and German ones like Konstantin and Joachim.I think many people realised (mainly through the media) how low class names like Jacqueline, Kevin and Michelle sound to the broad public. I think it's just narrow-minded. Should I ever have children they're either going to be named Daphne or Alaric. Shoot me.Edit: I just realised Alaric is actually Ancient Germanic. Woohoo. I got lucky.

KEVIN AND LIAM AREN'T EVEN "AMERICAN" NAMES!Do some research already, because you obviously don't know ANYTHING. "Knowing that no children in Sweden have Swedish names," DID YOU READ THE POST? DID YOU? AT ALL? Malte rose 38%. Wow, isn't that the most American name ever? I mean, I know like a billion little Malte's, don't you? IT'S A SWEDISH NAME. BEING USE ON SWEDISH KIDS. I swear, it's like you saw Liam and Kevin in this post and just zeroed in on them. "OMG! THESE ARE NAMES I LIKE TO BITCH ABOUT! I'M GONNA DO SO RIGHT NOW WITH ABSOLUTELY NO FACT BEHIND MY ARGUEMENT!"American's DO NOT HAVE THEIR OWN NAMES. AND YOU DO NOT GET TO DECIDE IF PEOPLE USE NAMES FROM OTHER CULTURES. THAT IS NOT YOUR PLACE. I LOVE FRENCH NAMES. I AM NOT FRENCH. IF THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO BARF AND KILL YOURSELF (in whichever order you choose), FINE BY ME. Keep your dumb, racist comments to yourself. ALSO, YOUR PARENTS NAMED YOU ERIK. Do you ever tell them "MY NAME MAKES ME WANT TO BARF. WHY COULDN'T YOU GIVE ME AN AMERICAN NAME LIKE KEVIN?"

I'm not "bitching".I love Italian names myself, but that's because I have Italian ancestry.I just hate the names Kevin and Liam. It implies the kid is a yuppie, just like Kennedy and Cassidy on girls.Stop freaking out whenever I post something. People are going to hate both of us.As for the last thing, I didn't tell them that. Nor would I even think of saying such.

WTF??Now, I totally disagree with the entirety of your post, but this part: "The only Europeans still using THEIR OWN names are (get ready to cringe) the Moroccan, Pakistani, Turkish, and Somali immigrants, none of whom belong in Europe anyway due to their prudishness and intolerance." (bolding mine) is really revolting. Way to falsely stereotype a massive group of people and make yourself look like a bigoted, ethnocentric ass. Also, what does it matter if people use names that don't belong to their culture? If everyone only used names that came from their heritage it would be awfully boring and nobody would have a very wide selection. It's not such a horrible, evil thing if people use names outside of their heritage. Seriously. Have you been hanging out with Loxandra too much?

It matters because it looks stupid! And anyone who constantly beats their wives, behaves coldly, and torches historic synagogues (the Jews are the only non-Christians native to Europe) doesn't belong in tolerant Europe! Those Muslim immigrants rape native European women, kill Jewish students (NOT A SINGLE MUSLIM felt bad for poor Ilan Halimi), have too many children, don't let their daughters get educations, and dress like it's still the 19th century. My message to EVERY Muslim in Europe: GET OUT! It was better before the 1950s, when not a single Muslim lived on that continent.

SpainSpain was ruled by Muslims up until the Reconquista around, what, the 11th century and they were some of the most enlightened peoples in the world. No Muslims in Europe until the 1950s. Pleh.
vote up1
Exactly, and SicilyWhere Muslims have left the most gorgeous art, and somehow still inprint the local culture.

You're not even a European..it's people like you that give the US such a bad name. You wonder why Europe always seems to be pissed off with you?
Please, take your ignorance and racial hatred somewhere else.
vote up1
You make me laugh. A lot.
vote up1
You seriously have to be jokingDo you actually believe that every single Muslim fits your ignorant stereotype? Have you personally interviewed every single Muslim in Europe about Ilan Halimi? Somehow I don't think so.I really don't know what to say. I'll choose to believe that you're being deliberately obtuse to get a rise out of the board.
vote up1
I just think it's not fair that Muslims kill Jews. Europe isn't like the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, or Argentina. They're not supposed to be nations of immigrants. Why can't Muslims be happy around their own kind? Why do they have to make Europeans' lives miserable by living there and committing ALL the crimes?

This message was edited 11/2/2008, 1:17 PM

vote up1
I've lived in Europe all my life and I've never noticed all these Muslims running around raping women, murdering Jews and committing all possible crimes. How dare you speak like this of an area you don't know at all? MY life is certainly not made miserable by Muslims. And why isn't Europe "supposed" to be a "nation of immigrants"? It wasn't, it's becoming one, things change, anyway you're not from Europe what do you know or care?Oh, actually Europe can't be a nation of immigrants because it's not a nation, it's a continent. So I don't know how you can speak about it without even knowing that.
vote up1
Maybe you should tell Bosnian Muslims that they should leave their country!!(m)I'm European and I don't have a problem with 'our' Muslims, so why should you!?
You've obviously never been to Europe or met any Muslims if you can speak like that.
Good to know whose messages I'll not be responding to in the future.
vote up1
Oh my GODDo you have ANY idea how idiotic you sound?1. European countries have immigrants because they have CHOSEN to have immigrants. That's up to THEM, not you.2. All sorts of people commit all sorts of crimes. Prejudice like yours results in people being blamed for crimes they did not commit.3. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing people used to say about the Jews before the Holocaust, so I'd think very carefully about who you're prepared to pity and who you're prepared to blame.4. I think the Australian Aboriginal population along with the native peoples of other countries might have something to say about your assumption that migrating to THEIR land is okay.5. You're American. What on Earth gives you the right to believe that you can tell Europeans how Europe should be? Your arrogance is so staggering that there is no word for it.6. Erik isn't an American spelling. By your logic that's an appalling breach of cultural boundaries, so I expect you will be changing it to Eric asap?7. You know South-Eastern Europe? Full of white, European Muslims. Not immigrants, not recent converts, but genuine, original, dedicated, naturally Muslim Europeans. Whole COUNTRIES of them, with far more right to live in their country than you ever had to live in yours.

*claps loudly*Well said! I hope he gets banned. That would make me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Please find me some statistics...(m)That show that every single crime in the entirety of Europe was commited by a person who is Muslim.Thanks.

You know what....It is Americans like you that give your whole country a bad name. Don't get me wrong in this post- I have spent time in the US, I love the country and I love the people- but if I said that to a lot of people here in Europe or even back home in Australia I would get laughed at. And that is because a lot of the world are stereotyping your nation as ignorant bigots who run their mouth off about things they have know clue about- much like what you are doing against nearly 1/3 of this world who consider themselves Muslims.Honestly- don't you understand that it was ignorance, fear and stereotyping that led to the Holocaust? It is the same thing happening all over again...and we swore 60 years ago never again.People like you make me sad.
