Liam. A little popular, but I've always loved it. Sounds more substantial to me.

Definitely Will... Liam's WAY overdone right now and has become a trendy name. Will stands the test of time. (besides, I don't really like the name Liam... too preppyish)

I like William better for these reasons:

1. I think Liam sounds ridiculous / I think Will sounds very handsome
2. I think Liam is a completely contrived nickname / Will is a very natural nickname
3. Liam is very new and will be dated later / Will is timeless
4. Liam doesn't have etymological dignity. This means: William comes from Wilhelm, which comes from the elements Wil + Helm. Will means battle and Helm means Helmet/Protection. The element "Helm" is where we get our word Helmet from. Once you transfer Wilhelm to English and it becomes William, there is no way you could get Helmet out of the second element. Liamet? Doubts. Wil Will still means Battle and is still related to Wilhelm; Liam's too far removed.

I straight don't see the appeal of Liam at all. I don't see how people can get away using it as a nickname. Do people in other parts of the country say will-LEE-am or something? I have never heard it any way other than William. I mean the syllable emphasized in Liam doesn't even exist in William's original etymology. It baffles me. It's totally artificial. And as a name on its own it is BAFFLING! Also it is faux-Irish, which I find obnoxious.

My son is named William, and called Will. Liam just didn't occur to me at the time my son was born, but still, I think I still would have chosen Will. Will sounds strong and handsome, and has a thousand years of history behind it as a nickname for William. Liam has kind of an annoying sound to me. The EE-A sound I'm not fond of. Same reason I don't like Ian.

I prefer straight old William without a nn actually.

I love Will. Liam is nice, but Will is just so handsome. Liam seems almost more like its own name rather than a nickname anyway. I wanted to name my son William and call him Will, but unfortunately my husband's brother is named William. It makes me sad. :)

Neither. I love William. Will is so outdated and overused (like all nns to the classics - Ben, Mike, Nick). Liam is just ugly to my eyes and ears.

If you are going for a full name, I highly recommend William. That way you can go back and forth if you want, and if give the child a choice when he is old enough to have an opinion.

If you want to choose just one for a nn, I'd go with Will.

Liam. It just sounds better and not so nicknameish. it sounds more like a full name than will. will seems so weird. it IS a word and everything...just not very nice. i like william and wilhelm and liam, not will.

I would choose Liam simply because I've always like it more. The fact that it is becoming such a trendy name ruins it a bit. I would like Liam used as a nickname for William than as full name. Will is starting to be a bit more appealing to me lately because of Liam's popularity in the recent years.

Liam. I find Will to be boring. And I don't like the sound of it. Liam just has more to it imo.
