A few months after Hugo was sent abroad, Kat's childhood friend Mairéad had a seizure and she had to be rushed to the hospital. Kat left Viva taking care of her younger siblings and immediately went there to see her. The doctor was a little reluctant to let her in at first, because she wasn't family. But Mairéad told him she had to talk to Kat, she was the only family she had. Mairéad told Kat she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor a few months before, only she hadn't told anyone. But her time was ending, and so she wanted to ask Kat to take care of her two daughters, Niamh and Fainne, once she was gone. Mairéad's husband had died when Fainned was just a baby, her parents were also deceased and she had no siblings, but she always thought of Kat like her sister, and she and Hugo were the only ones that she felt she could trust her daughters with, since she didn't want them to live their lives from foster home to foster home. Kat promised her she would take care of the girls as if they were her own.
Kat cried a lot that day, but not in front of anyone. How did her life become such a mess? Her husband was miles and miles away and now she would lose her greatest support, her best friend.
She exposed the situation to her family and they instantly agreed to have Niamh and Fainne come live with them - they knew them since they were little kids and they adored them. Legal arrangements were taken care of and Kat was made the girls' legal guardian. Everyone said goodbye to Mairéad - she didn't want her kids to see her at the very end - and when the dreaded day came, Kat was the only one holding her hand.
Kat decided to have a break in her career - she had the finantial possibility of supporting them all, and she felt that the best for the family at the moment would be to stick together in the face of such tragedy. She is thinking of actually adopting Niamh and Fainne in the future, but she wants to wait for Hugo to make that decision. They only had a chance to talk to him after everything had happened. He was devasted for Mairéad's death, and completely supportive of Kat's decision to welcome the girls into their home.
