So far things have been great with June and David, he loves her children and dotes on June, bringing her flowers home after work on an almost weekly basis. The pair kept in close touch and Matt was there for his friend when Tommy's wife was killed in a car accident. Tommy's two daughters got along well with Siran and Izzy and Tommy's family was a frequent visitor at the Thoresen household. Tommy passed away eight months after his diagnosis. Matt knew that Tommy had wanted his girls to live with their grandparents, so he took the girls there. Unfortunately, Tommy's parents were too old to really take good care of the girls. Matt worked out with the grandparents that he and Faith could raise the girls and the grandparents could visit as often as they liked. So, not only did Matt and Faith adopt Emily and Rachel, but they also got a third set of grandparents. All of this happened just a year after Jonny was born. Faith is feeling a bit overwhelmed taking care of four little girls and Jonny, but she would not trade her hectic life for anything.

A few months after Hugo was sent abroad, Kat's childhood friend Mairéad had a seizure and she had to be rushed to the hospital. Kat left Viva taking care of her younger siblings and immediately went there to see her. The doctor was a little reluctant to let her in at first, because she wasn't family. But Mairéad told him she had to talk to Kat, she was the only family she had. Mairéad told Kat she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor a few months before, only she hadn't told anyone. But her time was ending, and so she wanted to ask Kat to take care of her two daughters, Niamh and Fainne, once she was gone. Mairéad's husband had died when Fainned was just a baby, her parents were also deceased and she had no siblings, but she always thought of Kat like her sister, and she and Hugo were the only ones that she felt she could trust her daughters with, since she didn't want them to live their lives from foster home to foster home. Kat promised her she would take care of the girls as if they were her own.
Kat cried a lot that day, but not in front of anyone. How did her life become such a mess? Her husband was miles and miles away and now she would lose her greatest support, her best friend.
She exposed the situation to her family and they instantly agreed to have Niamh and Fainne come live with them - they knew them since they were little kids and they adored them. Legal arrangements were taken care of and Kat was made the girls' legal guardian. Everyone said goodbye to Mairéad - she didn't want her kids to see her at the very end - and when the dreaded day came, Kat was the only one holding her hand.

Will couldn't sleep that night. He didn't know why. It must of been his sister because all he could remember after that was going downstairs at 2am to answer a phonecall from his mum.
"Will, it's Lucy. She's been in a car accident." The words rang in his ears and made his head hurt. His darling little sister, Lucy.
Will stole a quick kiss from Belle and drove as fast as he could to the hospital. His eyes ached from tiredness, but he had to keep going. The hospital was four hours away. When he got there, the smell was overpowering- bleachy cleaness- and there was far too much white for one hospital. Will reached resus to discover his grieving mother at Lucy's bedside. Her face was red and blotchy and she was craddling Lucy's young son in her arms. Lucy had died on the way to the hospital in the ambulance from her head injury.

He was asleep so Will guessed he hadn't been told of his mum's fate yet. After several discussions with Belle and his own mother, Will decided to adopt the boy- now Isaac John Hughes.
