[Opinions] Jethro?
Replies
I always think of Death Row! :~(
I hate to say it, but it sounds like "death row" when I hear it. It's a really nice name other than that.
I really, really love the name Jethro, and for a long time it was actually on my top ten list. Eventually I took it off, because every single person I told (that I liked the name) started laughing and going, "Like the Beverly Hillbillies? Are you serious?"
So, yes, I love the name but I'm not sure I'd like to stick a kid with it if they're going to have to deal with that every day.

Exactly
It's all very well to be a self-described "name-nerd", and like names that most people don't. But when it comes to actually naming a child, how a name is perceived by the general public is important. Yes, of course you must love the name, but really, your opinion is not the only one that matters. How others will perceive you child's name matters also, as much as some of us don't like to admit that.
A Jethro will be laughed at, a male Mischa will be laughed at, a Caspar will be laughed at. (It was A who really liked that name, and he's not here anymore, I realize.) It does matter.

I actually really like it and always have! I don't see it as "redneck", I see it as old-fashioned & kind of arty/hippy really. To me it fits in with other names like Dexter, Oscar, Chester, Jasper, Leopold, Rupert, Miles, Maximilian, Felix and Gideon. All of which I absolutely love by the way!
Jethro Tull, inventor of the seed drill.
I love Jethro! I think the name's association with Southern simpletons is inane and immaterial.
It can't shakes its hillbilly image for me, and it just sounds silly, though I understand that it's actually a Biblical name.
I love the name. Somehow, I couldn't use it myself...
...because for my own children - later - I'd prefer more "classic" names, nothing sounding too "modern". Jethro does sound a bit "modern" if you know what I mean. Very cool, you know. But I really love the name and would love, love, love to see it used by one of my friends for her child ;).

I do kind of think it sounds redneck, but I can see edginess, too, mainly from the associations with Jethro Tull (British expirimental rock is a lot more edgy than redneck). Honestly, I think it depends on what kind of person has the name - it can swing either way.
I love it
