Help[Opinions] Cary for a boy?
Our son is due in April and we have considered naming him Cary. It is a family name (only ever used in our family as a surname). We are ambivalent about using it because it sounds like Carrie and we don't want to cause him any unnecessary confusion regarding his name. However, we do very much like the name and would like your opinion. We live in the US. Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I started a poll to see how people responded to Cary and the majority thinks it would be cruel to name a boy Cary. Yikes!

I wouldn't worry about that
Most of the people who take those polls are much younger, or I should say more immature, than people who posts comments here.
I notice that whenever someone does a poll asking for ages, the average is anywhere from fourteen to sixteen. You can usually tell by the type of polls they post. The names / combinations look like something a bored high schooler in homeroom thought up a lot of times. Not always, but a lot more than here on the message boards.
Your little Cary will be in classes with Idly (see thread above) so he won't stick out in a bad way.

I think it's very handsome, especially since it has the namesake Cary Grant to stand on! I prefer it infinitely over whiny, 80's Cory.

I grew up (here in the U.S.) watching old movies and Cary Grant was one of my favorite actors. Love, love, love Cary for a boy.
I know an adult Cary (for him it's short for Clarence) and it isn't really a problem for him. (I asked once.)

I like Cary for a boy. I actually know a man in his late 30s named Cary. Then there is Cary Elwes, the actor.

is the first person I thought of too (well, okay, after Mr. Grant!). And Cary Elwes is hot -- just like Mr. Grant. Any name association with men as sexy as Messrs. Grant and Elwes must be a good thing!

When written, I would think Cary is a boy. When I hear it, however, unaware of the spelling, I would assume that Cary is a girl. That's not to say that Cary is a bad name for a boy - it's nice, and I can perfectly imagine a boy named Cary. It's just that the general public is more used to the name being used on girls (mostly spelt Carrie).
If you're very worried about any confusion people might get from the name, I would suggest just using it as a mn or using a name with a similiar meaning/sound.

Like Keely said, it reminds me of Cary Grant as well. Not a bad association!
To me the sound is so thoroughly unisex that a bit of confusion upon hearing it would seem normal and not particularly bothersome. Written down I first assume Cary to be male. Personally I only like it as a male name and with this spelling, so perhaps I'd hear it and first think it's male out of wishful thinking. :-)

I like it, and I think it works fine for a boy. If you're worried about people confusing it with Carrie, you can use it as a MN.
