Help[Opinions] Joseph and David
Both were recommended to me by CKE and I like them both quite a bit. However, they also happen to be the middle names, respectively, of his youngest brothers. Do you think they're usable?
It's frustrating to find names that appeal to us both that haven't been used by another family member (he comes from HUGE Catholic families).
Also: Katarina as a first name. What would you use as a nn? Could you take an Abraham seriously, or is the name too heavy?

I guess Joseph and David could still be used, if his brothers were fine with it. Katarina is nice, I quite like it and the nn Kat is cute. I think Abraham is a fantastic name and I'd take someone named Abraham seriously, for sure. Maybe that's because I'm a Sarah though, not sure!! I don't find Abraham to be a heavy name at all.

I think they're usable. The fact that they're shared in his brothers' middle names is sort of neat, actually, a family connection.
Katarina is an awesome name (I also like the spelling Katharina). I would probably use Kate or Kitty as a nickname, personally. Yes, I could certainly take Abraham seriously. I know at least one Abe myself, who is surely really an Abraham.

I think it's still usable, but perhaps as a middle name instead.
Katarina is LOVELY. It's one of my best friend's names! We call her Kat, but there's also Kitty, Kate, Katie, or Rina.
I personally like Abraham, but I'd fear my kid being teased about Abe Lincoln. Maybe for a mn.

I think Abraham is considered heavy because it isn't as used as it were like 100 years ago. If it was it wouldn't be heavy. I think it's a pretty masculine name. It's like John, we consider it a very ordinary name, maybe within 30 years it won't be (you can't find loads of baby John's nowadays).
I think you can use the same name, and/or find another variant of that name. Besides, both David and Joseph are currently middle names.
Katarina (or Catarina) is a very pretty feminine name. As a nickname, you can use Kate, Katie (use Katarina as if it was Katherine).
And David hasn't been done to death! It's a very nice name! Masculine name!

I think they're perfectly useable, though together would be a bit much. I find David really, really boring though.

ETA: I can totally take an Abraham seriously. Much more seriously than a Rudolph or a Julius even. I don't think it's out there or too-heavy at all. It's got that long A which has America's baby naming populace so enthralled right now. It's familiar and not difficult to pronounce. I don't see problems with it.
Edit again: And Abram really seems like a cop-out to me, to the point where I roll my eyes when I hear one's name being called.

I don't think it's a problem, considering they're middle names (so pratically never used)and it's a large family. As concerns the name themselves, they're very nice, but David has been done to death.
Katarina's ok, but I prefer Catherine or Caterina. A cute nn, apart from Kate and Katie, could be Rina.
I can't imagine a Abraham who isn't Lincoln, or a orthodox Jewish guy with a beard and sidelocks...so yes, it's too heavy.

Thanks for the info on Abraham. I'll work on Abram, than. :-D I do like Caterina...though I might spell it Catarina. I love the look of two As. :-D
David has been done to death, and I'm hesitant to use it because of that. Joseph is also #11. But I like them well enough to think of using them, though maybe not David.

I don't see what the problem is with David and Joseph being his brothers' mns. I mean, you are always very set on "honoring" names, it seems almost obligatory that you honor somebody in your or his family by using their name.
But if you both don't get along with his brothers, that's something else. lol
I can't really see a modern guy named Abraham. I can't picture Abraham playing Little League, or joining the Boy Scouts, or getting a detention for shooting spitballs in algebra class, or having girls want to go to the prom with him, or any of those modern, ordinary, humdrum things modern guys do.

Yah...but his brothers are young.
They're not someone I'd honor. When I think of honoring I think of patriarchs and matriarchs. The only way I would honor a sibling is if they passed away.

As a middle name, mayhaps.
I wouldn't dream of using one of the names as a first name. Even if I was, it's doubtful that I'd use it. I've given up on Nathaniel, even though he will be a brother-in-law and only goes by Nat. :-(
I think if I used one of the names, it would be fine. But the boys are so close in age and always together that using them both would be too big of a connection.

And then you might end up listening to endless replays of "How come you used HIS name and not mine?" and "Ha ha, she likes me better than you, she used YOUR name!"

Well, if their the mns of his brothers, would they really get confused? I think they are useable. But if you have a dislike of these brothers and they would think he named them for them, then maybe I would reconsider. But even then, Joseph and David have broad histories and probably no one would assume you named them for said brothers. Sorry for the ramble there, hope it made sense :)

I've known people with very heavy religious names, and although Abraham is not my cup of tea, I would be able to take one seriously.
