Alright, I am a self confessed Harry Potter lover. and I'd have to say Snape, since the last book, has been my favorite character. Dumbledore took a step down to him.
So, let's just say I decide to name my kid ------ Severus. what do you think, honestly? I know it's been used before Harry Potter. but what are your thoughts on it, even bypassing the HP connection?

Bypassing the HP connection, I like this name, but probably not for a real kid. It probably wouldn't suit a person until he's old. Unfortunate, because I like the name... it's almost made my list. Names I prefer with the same meaning and similar sound are Severin and Soren (but only with the umlaut).

While I am a huge Harry Potter fan, and even a liker of Snape, I do not like Severus. It suits the character, but I just can't see it being used in the real world. It sounds to forbidding and negative. Sever just jumps out of it. If you really want to use it, then I would relegate it to the middle name slot. By the way, I have no problem with people naming after HP. People have been naming children after their favorite characters for centuries. Why should HP be off limits then? That's how I see it.

No, I can't help but thinking the HP-connection. Even if I try to forget it, name still seems very negative to me, because of the meaning and its harsh sound.
Also, I don't think that the mean, greasy-haired teacher who loves to mentally abuse his students, is that great namesake.. (Yes, I hate Snape almost as much as Ginny-dear.)

Without even thinking of the HP connection
I can tell you I dislike it. It's too close to the world severe for me, and the name just seems too adult and cold for a child. I just can't see the appeal at all, honestly. Sorry.

It's odd, because I love the softer Sévérine, but Severus sounds ugly, and I instantly think of amputation. No way I could see a child called Severus. (I remember hearing the name of Harry's third child and thinking, "Who would do that to an innocent kid? Two awful names at once? Especially with older siblings James and Lily? That simply isn't fair at all.") So, yeah, I do not see the appeal.

I mostly imagine someone's leg being crudely lopped off. Not something I want to connect with my child!

I've always liked Snape (weird I know), but the name just doesn't work for a child in my opinion. Can't get over the whole 'sever(e)' thing.

The meaning bothers me much more than the potential HP association. It's a nice name but not only does it sound almost like severe it means severe as well. I wouldn't want to name my little boy that.

Although of course Snape did turnout to be a good guy he didn't have that nice a personality in general. And disregarding the HP connection, it means severe and like heron says can be split to sever us so I get visions of axe murderers lol, sorry

I don't know if I can separate it 100% in myhead from the HP character, but when I try, I see the word 'sever' first, which is unpleasant. It sounds like 'sever us'. But if you like Severus, you should use it, regardless of opinions.
