[Opinions] Dick?
Just wondering.. do the connotations rule this name out for you, or can you honestly look past it and view this as just a name? For me it's a little tough...

Oh, you all are so young!
Why would Dick Cheney call himself Dick? Because for people of his generation and older, Dick is simply the normal pet form of Richard and no one immediately thinks of the negative slang meanings when they hear it. Anyone over the age of 50 grew up knowing many men named Richard who were called Dick in everyday life, and so it seems completely average.
And before the 1960s, the sexual meaning of the word "dick" would have been so rare in "polite conversation" that anyone who complained about it in regards to the name Dick would have been accused of having an dirty sick mind. :) And that goes doubly for complaining about "Dick Van Dyke". I don't think I ever thought of that as being any sort of "bad" name until it was mentioned on this thread.
John has about as many negative slang connotations as Dick does (toilet and prostitute's customer), but I don't see anyone saying it would be a cruel name to give a child. Is Dick Van Dyke really that much more suggestive than John Waters, John Hooker, or John Bowles? :)

Sure, people my age and younger have little access to the normalcy of the name Dick for people who're from previous, Dickful generations. But almost every person who has responded here, qualified their disapproval with exemptions for older men; and besides, it wasn't us who stopped using it. It's not dumb to rule out the name Dick for babies today (you sound sorta like you're saying it is).
[I think I know why Cheney still calls himself Dick... it's not much different from Condoleezza calling herself that and not Connie, or Scooter calling himself Scooter (power statement -- like Cicero). Besides, Dick's no politician.]
I feel dumb for this, but even I, with my mediocre breeding, honestly never noticed the humor in the names John Waters and John Bowles. Thanks for the giggle. I'm sure now I'll think twice about the full name of every John I meet, looking for more potty jokes.

O_o?
You never made the John association?! My DH has stated he's frequently gotten port-o-potty jokes (at least, when he was school-aged). I brought up the solicitation angle, and he was NOT amused (I got a giggle, though). ;o) He said he was talking with a woman at work named Regina, and asked he how she thought her name might work on a new baby (Regina is a mn we're considering). She encouraged him to use Regina, saying, "I love my name!" DH just stared at her and said, "My wife is the only other person I've heard make that statement." Apparently, with a name like John, affection for one's appellation is a foreign concept. :o)

I actually think of the Famous Five character first (Enid Blyton did those names really well.... Dick had an Aunt Fanny... lol), then this old guy that lived down the road from my friend and had lots of old junked cars, then the penis association. To me (don't knwo whether this is the rest of NZ too), 'dick' as an insult means someone stupid or inept or unaware, more than jerk or a-hole. Lol not that that matters! The point is, no I wouldn't use Dick; I don't like Richard in the first place, and the teasing the poor kid would get if I used it is enough to put me off without wondering whether i can get past the associations.
Not only is it the male body part, but its also used to describe a jerk (usually male, another word for a**hole so to speak). I have never met one in real life.
My uncle was named Richard nn Dick. He was always "Uncle Dick." I'm not positively sure, but I believe back when he was born in the late 1920 the word had not yet acquired its slang meaning. I honestly don't know if he ever suffered any embarassment over it because we weren't that close. But no, I think the slang meaning has rendered this nickname unuseable today. Most people would definitely make the association.
Nope...dick is too much engraved in everyone's mind as a term for genitalia to really take it serious on anyone under 55. Atleast in America, it would be equated to naming your child Penis or Cock except for the fact that Dick has history as a name. I just don't dig it.
I do like the Dick and Jane stories though and I remember when I was little I thought nothing of his name and easily got past the genital thing.

I would not use it, but I far prefer this to any other Richard nickname (especially Richie, which I find abominable). I do actually rather like the sound. The association of penis and/or jerk is very strong, though, stronger than other names (Willie, Johnny...) that can mean penis. So, not very usable. But I do think that it's partially because it's associated with old men that it's out of style, and it may overcome its slang meanings and make a comeback when Bob does. We'll see.
Not only are the connotations too strong, this was my grandfather's name, who actually passed away yesterday morning. I really hate to say this so soon, especially since I never met him myself, but he was kind of a... you know.
So yeah, I agree with you, it's kind of tough take it seriously. =/

A brother's friend
has a dad who goes by Dick. Once, in an argument where the son thought his father was acting unreasonably, he yelled, "What's it like being a Dick, Dad?" :oP

LOL!
HAHA LMAO
It's a no-go. Just not a goodidea, and the word dick has meant "penis" for a very long time.
Honestly, I like the sound and I dig the old connotations--I see it and think "detective". If it wasn't slang for the ween (and more importantly to me, for what Wikipedia describes as "an abrasive and inconsiderate person"), I'd think it was pretty cool. Unfortunately, it is slang for those things, and so it's out. Woe.

I don't get why they don't just go by Rick, Rich or something. I'm not sure, but I assume that his name is Richard?
I don't get men like Dick Chaney, that are in politics or something. Why don't they change it? How can you meet a man named Dick and take him seriously?

In high school, the father of one of my friends was Dick Hard--. I thought nothing of it and I don't think any of the other kids did either. And you would think we would have, at that age. At some later point it occurred to me that the man might have a rather unfortunate name. But really it was just a passing thought....
If I were him I'd go by another nn.
I know a guy named Nick Scott Wood (say it fast) his parents didn't catch it.

you'd be surprised...
Or maybe not, to know how many men are named Richard Head. And who go by Dick.

Oh my...that poor man :(
I had an uncle
once, through a now-ended marriage, whose name was Dick Ball.
That's not quite as bad though.
Anyway yeah I don't see Dick as namey very much, I know a respectable old man who has Dick as an occasional nickname for Richard, and it always startles me and makes me cringe slightly to hear him addressed that way.

No way!
I have a professor, first name William, who has a brother, first name Richard. They go by Bill and Dick.
With last names they're Bill Ball and Dick Ball, the most unfortunately named pair of brothers I've ever seen.
Never figured there'd be another one out there. :-D

I thought you were going to say Dick van Dyke, but Dick Trickle is wore. Dick van Dyke is funny, but Dick Trickle is just gross.
Or Dick Van Dyke.
But yeah, Dick Trickle is pretty bad.

Once, watching a NASCAR race, somebody asked "Who is it drives the Viagra car?" (for non-NASCAR people, that just means, whose racecar is sponsored by Viagra) The correct answer was Mark Martin, but my husband blurted out "Dick Trickle, of course!" which completely brought the house down.
yuck. poor guy. nt .
:)
:)
haha I agree I really do like the sound but then a second after I think I like that name, I'm like oh right...
