In Italy, Nando is used as a nn for Ferdinando or Fernando (itself a contraction of Ferdinando, but I think sometimes it's used as a full name).
The name used to be relatively frequent, but not super-common either, nowadays it's slightly fallen out of use. I associate it more with the South of Italy.
