There was a word, VIK, which meant a place where a market was held. I think a vik was an unofficial market, i.e., one for which no charter was granted, so they were usually held outside of towns.
Another meaning of VIK was "creek" or "inlet". The Vikings were so called because of their habit of skulking about in inlets.
