[Facts] Find names from meanings?
It's all very well looking for names and then finding out their meanings but what about fiding names FROM their meaings. When the time comes for me to name my children (obviously I haven't had any yet) I want to name at least 1 of my children by the meaning of a star. No I dont want to call my baby boy Caisseopia. I personally think the issue needs addressing. If anyone has any meanings of such type names please reply.

Stella or Star means star.

It better be a girl thenI think the names apart from Stella sounds a bit too odd, for me at least. If the name has to mean star that is.

Mike C.'s got that coveredOur illustrious Webmaster, Mike C. (All praise His name!) has fairly recently devised a clever search feature on the main page of this website, whereby one may search for a name by meaning.Go to:www.behindthename.comLook for the SEARCH feature there. Type the word "star" in the box.
Make sure that only "search in meanings" is checked, directly below. Then hit search. The search engine will pull up a number of interesting names that all pertain to stars.-- Nanaea

It's good to know that at least one person has figured out the search capabilities of the site.

It's a cool feature! It also must add to the work of maintaining this site, because now you've got to index every name you put up here.Hey, Mike? If you ever need a volunteer to help out with the indexing of new names you're always adding to the site, I'll volunteer. You've got my e-mail addy.-- Nanaea

Thanks for the offer Nan, but actually the process is almost entirely automated. I've written a program which reads my HTML files (eg a.html) and pulls out information on each name, such as meanings, languages, and keywords. At the same time the program builds lists of names that sound alike and names that are related to one another (based on the links between names). When it's done it creates look-up files which I must upload to my website for the search scripts to use. While the program is going through the names it does some error checking on the entries, looking for common typos (teh, englsih, etc), broken links, and alphabetization mistakes. The way I have it set up right now, the process is tedious and needlessly complicated, but it's much easier than going through "by hand" and indexing the names.

I should've figured you had that covered, too, Mike. ;)-- Nanaea

Mr. Campbell has the time to devise useful features like this because no one wastes his time quizzing him about the chronology of TV acquisition in his family. And if they did he wouldn't be dumb enough to answer.(No more personal revelations until someone tells me where Pre-op went to college! I've racked my brain trying to think of Marxist economics departments in US colleges in the mid-80s and can't narrow it down past a dozen.)

Better double them Ginko supplements, old beast. I already talked about my wild univesity years (www.behindthename.com/messages/5087.html), in response to you query. A propos, Sherlock, I'm no more a Marxist than you are a follower of Sai Baba (even though I was always partial to Harpo). Its amusing you came up with such a deduction!

For reasons unbeknownst even to me, I never saw your reply post. That was about the time my PC quit color-differentiating posts I'd opened and those I hadn't. Things do slip thru the cracks, y'know. Sorry to be so wearily insistent about things already answered. The Marxist thing wasn't serious, altho I must admit the occurrence of Che, bloodshed, revolution in your old alias and e-mail address makes one speculate. But to paraphrase Groucho, I doubt you'd want to belong to any party that would have you as a member.

Going to high school and college in Greece in the 70's and early 80's -- the apogee of "marxist chic" in Greece -- and *not* being one, was a very lonely affair. We even had trouble finding dates :P
