[Games] Pioneer Congrats: Sign-Ups
We'll try this once more, and I promise that I'll try to actually do it up right for once, okay? NOTE: This Congrats will require you to write a bit about your fam each round. If you don't want to do that, please don't sign up, okay? Part of the fun of this one is telling the story of your families. :D Rules
-You will be required to write a little piece about your family each round, including signups. Won't be long or complicated, but if you don't want to write? Don't sign up.
-I'm limiting this to twenty-five people, or else I'll get horribly overwhelmed.
-No spelling changes. Nicknames are acceptable.
-For middle names, you may choose either from the surnames list or from the appropriate first names list. You must choose only from the first names list for first names. We're going to be making up pioneering families for this Congrats, and our story will start in 1843, when your husband and wife married. Are they back East, getting ready to look for new prospects in the West? Are they traveling already? Are they settling into a new life somewhere? Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to the inevitable destination of Oregon. Anything west of Missouri is fair game. ;)Now, then, the form!Username:

DW: Elizabeth Louise "Bettie", 24, Keizur, Will's assistantI have been married to my husband, Will Athey, for almost 2 weeks now. I have known Will for 5 years. I first fell in love with him when I saw how determined he is to be a photographer and to make photography a career people will respect. He is teaching me everything he knows about it and I find it so interesting! My parents were not overly happy about me marrying a man with out a "real" job, but I love him and I know he is going to make a wonderful husband and father (someday! Ü). A few weeks before our wedding, Will came to me and said that he has not been able to find good work near our home in St. Louis, Missouri. He feels very strongly about supporting his family, so we have decided to move west to Oregon and hope that business will be better there!I am very excited about moving west with my husband! I think this will be a wonderful time in our marriage! -Bettie Athey, 1843

The government wishes that they be civilized and they're calling in minister after minister to Christianize them. We're just a double bonus, me being a school teacher as well. We haven't left yet, Isaac says we'll be leavin in a few months. I'm just scared of all those stories I hear about them folk not makin it to their destination. We pray though and give our thanks to the Lord at all times and we know that the good Lord will help us and get us there safely.

Surname: Tharp
DH: Nathaniel Emseley "Nate" (22, rancher)
DW: Ruby-May Charlotte (19, nee Tarbox, school teacher) Nate Tharp was a ranch hand from Oklahoma territory who came back east to buy enough cattle to start his own ranch in Nebraska. Back in his home town of Pickering he met Ruby-May Tarbox who was the rich, young, pretty, local school teacher and daughter of the local banker. The two disliked each other from the start and had many debates and hurt feelings. Through a couple of mishaps Nate stayed longer in the east than he had intended to, during which time Ruby-May was continually thrown in his way. He got to learn about this time that she wasn't the fine rich lady she appeared to be but was really feisty, and a tomboy with a desire for adventure which she had so far only found in books. The result of these close encounters was that that spring Nate asked Ruby-May to marry him and she said yes, much to her parent's chagrin. Now the couple are headed to Nebraska eager to start their new lives.

Jasper and I were married 6 weeks ago. I thought we were happy in Boston, but late yesterday he came to me with news. His father has been asked to come to Oregon, and Jasper has decided that we are to go with him.Jasper wants to leave next week. I must admit a small bit of excitment and a large amount of anxiety.

DW (age, maiden name, & occupation, if applicable): Elizabeth Rachel James (18; homemaker)John and I were married eight months ago, and never did I expect we would be leaving Virginia for the West. But when he heard of a wagon train heading for California, he made the announcement he was ready to leave. Of course, we had discussed it before, but I didn't anticipate actually leaving. To be quite honest, I'm a little nervous...heading out for the frontier and an unknown world. I'm particulary sad about leaving my family, especially my mother and sisters. But, together, John and I have decided to embark on a new adventure into our lives, and we look forward to finding happiness in California.I write as we are leaving, and now the Virginia hills are disappearing. I wonder if we're ever meant to see them again, but now I must look forward to what lies ahead.

DH (age & occupation): John David "Jack" (carpenter/blacksmith)(22)
DW (age, maiden name, & occupation, if applicable): Mary Susan (Paine)(no job)(20)Jack and I were married just a few weeks ago. Jack works as a carpenter and a blacksmith. He makes furniture and does decorative pieces for some of Boston's elite residents. He's also a decent blacksmith. I don't have a job, but I'm pretty good at cooking and sewing. Neither Jack nor myself are too happy living in a big city like Boston, and we are tiring of the cutthroat attitudes of the people in those elite social circles that Jack so often interacts with. We weren't raised in high class families, and our social graces are considered lacking, though we are both quite friendly and approachable. We are planning to move West. Jack has no destination in particular in mind, but someplace like the Oregon or Montana territories sound promising. Jack is hoping to set up a blacksmith/carpentry shop and I would love to raise a large family with Jack. We plan on leaving as soon as we can; Jack just has to finish up a few more specialty orders and we'll be gone. We will find a place to rent in Independence before leaving with a wagon train going West.

DH: Julius Robert (20, rancher)
DW: Sophia Jane (18, née Packard)I moved from Boston to Montana with my family (Mum, Papa, Olive, Andrew, Willa, and me) and when I was 16 years old. It was a huge change. I'm the oldest, and I didn't really want to leave Boston. It was my home; everything I knew was there. But Papa got tired of city life, and he said that he "needed space." So he moved us to Montana where there's plenty of space for everyone. Maybe things were getting bad there, but I loved city life and I pitched a fit when Papa told me that we were leaving. But it's been two years since we moved here, and I think I've adjusted. Mum and Papa run the general store in the town of Roundup, Montana. My younger siblings work in the store, and I did too until a few months ago. I was 17 when I met Julius Applegate one day while I was working at the store. He's a rancher who raises cattle. He's tall, has shaggy dark hair, and he's handsome. I fell in love with him immediately. We finally decided to get married and now we live on his farm outside of town. We're so young and I don't really know what to expect in the future, but I feel lucky to have found a man that I really love in this small town.

Their 3 daughters and 6 sons were all trained at a small school near their Virginia estate. Daniel and Rebecca met and married through friends of their parents. Both were interested in coming to Chicago, Illinois, Rebecca to live in a big city, and Daniel to establish himself as a lawyer in an up-and-coming town. DH: Philip Julius Nathaniel, 23, general store owner
DW: Rebecca May, 18, nee FairlyNewly married, Philip and I are near setting off from our home in Salem, MA. I fear leaving my family behind, but times are hard and the family general store that Philip inherited after his father's death hasn't been as successful as it should, so now we are seeking a new life out west. We will be accompanied by five other families, one of them our neighbors. Philip says that we will be able to own a farm wherever it is that we settle, as I've always dreamed, and good heavens am I excited.. if only for that.

He was so nervous when he asked me to marry him and make the journey with him. He was sure I'd say no. If my parents and my sisters were still alive, I might have, but now that my family is gone, there's little reason for me to stay here. Fred is the most important person in my life now, and I'd follow him anywhere. We will be leaving in one week, on the six month anniversary of our marriage. I am a little frightened at the prospect of such a long journey. I've heard that the trail is difficult and there are all kinds of dangers, but Fred is confident that we will be alright. It's also sad to be leaving my home behind, even though most of the people I cared about here are gone, but I'm excited about building a new life in California.

He said, his brown hair matted with sweat from the long days work. "We're going to Oregon."I stood there with my mouth agape. Surely he was playing a game...? But no, he wanted to go. "O-okay." I finally stammered. At my consent he lifted me up into the air and twirled me about, flashing a bright smile. Then he relayed all his hopes and dreams to me for after we moved. So now, I'm packing up the wagon. I made the tearful desicion to leave my mother's wardrobe behind. I am no longer Temperance Elizabeth James. Against my father's wishes, Nathaniel and I have stolen away to Boston and eloped. I know my father will be furious when he wakes up my brothers and sisters tomorrow morning for chores and finds I am not there, but I'm so happy at being Mrs. Nathaniel Wagoner that can't bring myself to care. Nathaniel says we are going to go west and, as I write this, he is out scouring the city for a wagon caravan that will take us. I am scared, but so excited and happy, as well. I will miss my family, but I know my mother is watching over Nathaniel and I. She will keep our family safe as we travel west...

DH: William James (20, blacksmith)
DW: Elizabeth Mary (19, née Stoughton)William and I married a few months ago back home in Ireland. We wanted more than anything to settle down there and raise a family, but the famine was more than we could bear. We saved just enough to secure a place on a ship headed for America. Both of our fathers had gone there already to look for work, and we hadn't heard from them since, but it was our only option. Now we're living in New York City, and it's almost as bad as it was back home. William is a blacksmith by trade, and he's barely making enough for us to get by. The city is overcrowded, and everyday there's thousands more Irish getting off the boats. There's nothing for us here, so when we've saved enough, we're heading West. There's land out there for the taking, and we both think it's the perfect place to start anew.
