Perhaps it comes from the surname Bode. I've only heard it as a German surname, but it's origins could be elsewhere or diverse.
There's an atlete with Bode as a first name. I know I've read some historical account of the Holocaust with a woman named Bode (but with an umlaut over the "e"), but I don't remember which book it was in and it may have been a shortened name or a nickname.
