Since I have a dog called Rufus I kind of associates the name with him. BUT, I think it's a great name for a person as well. All of our dogs have names that are not really names for dogs (Rufus, Elsa Molly, Tekla, Tyra).
I would not laugh or think it was a dog's name if I heard it on a boy. I actually think it's a really "cool" name. I also know of an actor called Rufus something. If you feel that strong about Rufus I think you should use it. The more I think of it the more I like the idea of naming a boy Rufus. Don't care what your friends say. In this case I think they're wrong.
