Message: "Veruca" - Behind the Name

With the remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory getting so much buzz, I realized that I'm actually quite fond of the name (not the character) Veruca, however, I can't find anything about it.

Is it a valid name, or something Roald Dahl made up when writing the book? If it is valid, what are it's origins, meaning, and if possible, popularity.
