[Facts] Does anyone know meaning of Russian female name Zoria?
my great grandmother came to canada as a young woman. so i am of russian descent, 5th generation. the question regarding does anyone know the meaning of my name, (female and Russian descent); comes because I havent ever seen it given in name meaning books, nor met anyone with the same name that could tell me. My grandmother died when I was in grade four, and I didnt get a chance to ask her if she knew the meaning of it. My mother gave me the name, because when she was a young girl and went to school, her best friend had this name, and mom decided that when she had a girl she would name her by this name, Zoria; but she couldnt tell me any factual info for its name meaning either.

I have read somwehere that it means "star", but I don't know if it's true.*Brother, you say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it? Why not all agreed, as you can all read the Book?* - Sogoyewapha, "Red Jacket", Seneca Nation

It's a form of Zora, which means dawn.

Here's some more thoughts on how I think your name may be connected to star. In Bulgarian folklore, I don't know about others, Venus was thought to be a star becuase it actually appears on the horizon *around dawn* and is very bright. So people used to call that star Zornitza (which comes from Zora, which means dawn). Hope this helps.
