In French, it's probably closer to es-meh (no emphasis of syllables).
Esmé's the masculine spelling, while Esmée's feminine spelling; both forms are pronounced the same. The first bearer of the name was Esmé Stuart, 1st Duke of Lennox (1542?–1583), who was born and raised in France and who had a French mother iirc. He was also the cousin of James VI/I of Scotland and England.
