Origin of female name Stana: "In order to "stop" (Arabic, "stannah" or similar means "to stop" "stop") getting female children, or to say that there are "enough" girls in the family (*usually after 1st or 2nd girl in the fam. - comm.transl.) and to mark the beginning of birth of males, Serbs used to give names such as: Stana, Stanija /read. Staniya/, Stanica, Stanka, Stanomirka, Dostana and the like. Thanks to this custom in norther Metochia /todays Kosovo/ there are many more female than male names containing "stan".
