[Facts] Origin of "Ory"
Hi,
I'm searching for the origin/meaning of the name "Ory", whether as a surname or a male firstname (mostly used, AFAIK, in the U.S.). It doesn't seem to be featured in the on-site databases. Does anyone have any info?

There's a prominent surname of French origin found in the southeastern US: Horry, pronounced "Ory". Any chance that might be what you're looking for? In a lot of years in the US, I've never encountered "Ory" per se as any kind of name.

I found a genealogy site, and there are plenty of people surnamed Ory, *and* every conceivable variant spelling of it (Horry, Ourie, etc., etc.). It's of French origin, yes. So I'm satisfied with that. And as for the first name status of it, someone else here has pegged Ori as a Jewish first name. I guess I'll use that instead, and combine it with a Jewish-sounding surname (it's for a fictional character).
Ori strikes me as the same type of name as Hiram, Ira, Myron, etc., which are names I find quite amusing - probably because Goldie Hawn gets them mixed up in the comedy "Seems Like Old Times" (with Charles Grodin as Ira, Hawn's character's husband)!

Can't help you with Ory, but, I queried for "optional spelling + name + Hiram" and got this site.
Actually I am looking for a male Scottish name. I am told that it is 6 letters, starts with H and ends with M. I am having trouble finding any male name that falls in these guidelines. I found Hansom and Haiyum. Thought there might be a variation of Hiram for six letters??? Any suggestions?

I know a boy named Ori, Jewish, so I tried a few searches. :) Afraid I know nothing about the name, but according to http://www.hebrewletters.com/ Ori is a Hebrew name that means "my light." Hope it's the right name. :)
