[Facts] the name Udo
hello, I have a discrepancy as to the meaning of the name Udo. behindthename.com concisely states the meaning to be "prosperity - derived from the Germanic uodal". another site says the meaning is "unselfish". are they both correct? any further info you can provide will be greatly appreciated. if possible, please include the correct phonetic pronounciation. thank you, Bruce Hedges

What was the other website were you using?

above is where I saw "unselfish" as the meaning in the first names for boys "u" section. still not sure if it actually applies to "Udo".
since posting yesterday, I have also found "Udolf" in two books with the meaning stated in both as "prosperous wolf". this is neat because I named my new puppy "Udo" last week, and every time I tell people her name the first question is "what does Udo mean" - hence, my post. any further confirmation/general information you might provide on "Udo" will be greatly appreciated. thanks, Bruce

Score one for our Mike C...
Hey Bruce,
I went to a reputable German namesite for an objective confirmation, and it stated (in German) that Udo was an Old German [language] variant of Ulrich. It broke down the origin of Ulrich, and sho' nuff, Udoal means "prosperous".
So next time, who ya gonna believe: some harmless Brit namesite or our glorious Canadian webmaster with 9,000 carefully researched names and a cool mom?
