I've found those two historical references to the goddess Nanaea -- or rather, to the Temple of Nanaea as mentioned in the first book of The Maccabees.
Flavius Josephus, in both his works *The Jewish War* and *Antiquities of the Jews*, identifies Nanaea with the goddess Artemis.
Appian, in his *Syrian Wars*, identifies Nanaea with the goddess Aphrodite.
So, I guess I'm half virgin huntress and half booty-call babe. No wonder I was such a contrary kid when growing up! :)
