Derived from the Old German elements bald "bold, brave" and hilt "battle". This was the name of a 7th-century saint, the wife of the Frankish king Clovis II. She was apparently an Anglo-Saxon, her original name being the Old English cognateBealdhild. She is also called Bathilde.
