Derived from Argelia, which is the Spanish name for the North African country Algeria. The country's name is in turn derived from the name of its capital city, namely Algiers (which is known as Argel in Spanish). The city's name is ultimately derived from Arabic الجزائر (al-Jaza'ir) meaning "the islands".
