Meaning & History

Roman cognomen which was derived from the Greco-Roman name SYMPHORUS.

The earliest known bearer of this name is a 2nd-century martyr and saint from Augustodunum in Roman Gaul (now Autun in eastern France), who is better known in English as saint SYMPHORIAN of Autun. He was born into an affluent family, to a Roman nobleman or senator named FAUSTUS and his wife AUGUSTA, who presumably was at least partially of Gaulish descent, since her last words to her son are recorded as having been in Gaulish.
