Meaning & History

This name is used as 織部 with 織 (shoku, shiki, o.ru, (-)o(.)ri) meaning "weave" and 部 (bu, -be) meaning "section, department, class."
In the case of daimyō and celebrated master of the Japanese tea ceremony Furuta Shigenari (古田 重然), better known as Furute Oribe (古田 織部) (1544-1615), the name Oribe is a pseudonym, being a hyakkanna (百官名), a court rank-style name that samurai used to announce oneself and give himself authority.
The name comes from the name of an office (織部司/Oribeshi or Oribe-no-tsukasa), belonging to the Ministry of the Treasury under the Ritsuryō system, which deals with textiles.

One recent bearer of this name is former football player Oribe Niikawa (新川 織部) (1988-).

This name is very rarely used in modern times.
