Derived from Greek πηγή (pêgê) "a spring, fountain; fount, source", possibly taken from the Greek title of the Virgin Mary, Ζωοδόχος Πηγή (Zôodochos Pêgê), meaning "life-giving spring" (or πηγή ζωής (pêgê zôês) "fountain of life" or "source of life"). In some cases it may be a short form of Chrysopigi.
