Variant of MORVEN. From the Scottish place name #Morvern#, a district in north Argyll, #Mhorbhairne# in the original Gaelic, meaning "sea gap" or "big gap" (#muir# "sea" or #mór# "great", #bhairne# "gap"). Mhorbhairne appears as the kingdom of FINGAL in the Ossianic poems of James Macpherson. 'Morvern Callar' is a 1995 novel by Scottish author Alan Warner, narrated in first person by a young woman of the same name. This was turned into a film in 2002. Gaelic "silence"
