Meaning & History

Of debated origin and meaning.
Some scholars argue that this might be a place name rather than a personal name, and if so, that it would most likely be a contraction/abbreviation of A(l)d(e)beri, which might correspond to modern-day Albury, Oxfordshire.
Others point out that it does appear in a list of persons in the Domesday Book and that it is a "feasible mistake" to read the abbreviation "Adb't" as Adbrei. If that were the case, "Adb't" would have been short for Ad(el)bert(us) and the name thus a cognate of Old English Æþelbeorht or Eadbeorht.
