Comments (Meaning / History Only)
I suspect this is a Spanish invention, either a contraction of Amaryllis or a spin on Damaris. Names ending in -is, -ys became very popular in Puerto Rico in the late 80s. It has no roots in Hebrew other than sharing a superficial similarity to the Hebrew name Amariah.
