The word "Aithne" means "acquaintance" in Irish. My guess is that its use as a spelling of "Eithne" arose out of confusion of the two words on the part of people with only a nodding acquaintance with Irish.

Aithne is not just a variation on Eithne, it is a separate name meaning fire.
