Life has continued for the Cosmos family. Rose is grown into a beautiful young woman, and has many young men asking to walk her out. Hazel has also grown into a beautiful young women, but is still very quiet. Oliver wanted to join the army, but his father wouldn't let him until he was 16. By the time he turned 16, his craving to go off to fight had died (along with a few friends and their older brothers!). Myrtle, Basil and Jasper are in the nether-land of not a child, but not an adult.
Driving home one night in August of 1917, Humphrey saw that one of the neighboring farms was on fire. With strong memories of his uncle Lothar and the fire that killed his family, Humphrey went to help. He was able to pull the girls out to safety, but then the house partially collapsed. Braving the flames once more, he entered again. Spotting a man struggling to carry an unconscious woman, he grabbed her and signaled for the man to follow him out. Instead of following, the man tried to go grab his son. The house collapsed completely, and neither survived.
Humphrey brought the 3 females to his home to recover. Caty and Beth (the daughters) had no injuries and minimal damage from the smoke. Both recovered quickly. Myrtle soon had the two girls feeling right at home, and the three very quickly became best friends!
Gerty, however, had some very extensive burns and a lump on her head from the first collapse. She convalesced for some time. Feeling guilty for being unable to do more to save her family, Humphrey made sure that she was very comfortable and content. This attention soon turned into love between the two of them.
The two of them were married May 1, 1919. Their first son was born the following Valentine's day. Feeling that he was truly a gift and proof of their love, they named him as such. With 9 children between them, they feel that their family is more then big enough, and do not plan on having any more children.
With somebody there to take over the household chores, Rose decides to finish her mothers book. It is published in May, and she receives a substantial payment, plus a request to continue with more. Humphrey refuses to let Rose give him the money, and tells her to go and see the sights that she has always dreamed of. And so, Rose packs Hazel up and the two of them go off on a tour of Europe.
The family is once again content. The grandparents are amazed and pleased at the size of their lone surviving child's family. Things are once again looking sunny for the Cosmos family.
