Millie sells her second and third novel, and now the family has the luxury or being moderately wealthy. However, Fritz grew up on the family farm, and has a strong work ethic. So, instead of wallowing in their new semi-wealth, they continue to live much as they had before.
However, the family has done some renovations done to the house. The family now has 4 bedrooms upstairs along with a classroom/playroom. Downstairs, the kitchen and bathroom has been updated to include the latest modern touches. Also, there are two "master suites" on opposite ends of the downstairs for the grandparents and parents.
They also built a dorm near the barn for the help to live in. There are 4 bedrooms, a kitchen space and a double bathing room. Two of the bedrooms contain 2 bunks, and the other two contains a large bed. The rooms with only 1 bed are for the two couples who live and work on the dairy farm.
They employ:
* an elderly couple whose own farm burnt down 6 years ago and lost everything. She cooks for the group of guys, while he does all of the light work.
* a young couple just starting out and both from families too poor to provide them with any help. She does laundry for the family, and also for another 2 families in town.
* younger brothers, one from each side of the couple above - they are bunked together
* two, middle aged farm hands/confirmed bachelors. These two have been there the longest of the help.
Millie was working on her fourth book (of what is now a series), when a polio outbreak occurred in the area. Hazel, Oliver, and Myrtle all caught the disease. Basil and Jasper were sent to Portland to stay with Sasha and family. Rose stayed in town. Millie spent every minute of her time nursing her family through it. Oliver and Myrtle had fairly minor cases, and recovered completely within a month. Hazel, however, had a more server case, and almost died. Two months after she first got sick, she finally started to recover. One month later, her health was back, but she had server weakness in her left leg and had to use a cane for the rest of her life.
Millie's constant attention saved all of her children's lives. However, it weakened her body, and she ended up catching pneumonia just weeks after Hazel recovered. Her weakened body was ravaged by the illness, and she wasn't able to pull through. She died, leaving her book unfinished.
All of the children were brought home for Millie's funeral, and Rose decided to stay and help out. Rose and Hazel took over teaching their younger siblings. Rose, Hazel, and great-mama Abigail do the cooking and cleaning. Hazel, however, has also taking up all the needlework, as it doesn't require any leg strength.
Fritz has a permanent sadness to him now that Millie is gone, and no longer answers to Fritz. Humphrey continues to work on the farm, but doesn't smile, except for his children.
