Abe has taken a shine to Etheline, and the relationship has the makings of a courtship, while Anneliese looks up to Kaye like a big sister.A young boy who works at Matt's old Blacksmith shop, the son of the owner, appropriately named Smithson "Smithy" Jenkins, has fallen in love with Io. Unfortunately, she's currently being courted by a young man named Jacob Harker. Jacob is stuck up and haughty, but he has enough money to help Io support her family if they get married.Smithy is too shy to say anything to Io. Will he be able to, before it's too late?

It is 1920. The Fields family has undergone several changes in the past five years. In 1917, the US entered WWI. In the summer of 1918, Jonny was drafted into the US military. He was deployed to France on August 21, 1918. He saw three battles, which changed his outlook on life completely. In the third confrontation, Jonny was wounded when he was shot in the thigh. He was patched up in a field hospital, then flown back to the States for more extensive medical treatment. He was able to come home in December of 1919, a few months after the war was over. He has completely recovered, but still occasionally feels pain, and will likely walk with a limp for the rest of his life.
Also in 1918, a tornado swept though the Fields' Indiana hometown, destroying almost everything. Luckily, they escaped to a storm cellar, but had to live in the dark for a week before rescuers were able to get to them. Jack, Jamie, and Ben rebuilt their home and barn, but the crop was a total loss. The Fields' have hit on some rough times financially, but Jack has taken out a few loans to cover expenses.
When news of the Spanish Influenza reached their town, Jack stocked up on supplies and placed his house under a preventative quarantine. For three weeks, no one left the property, and Jack made sure no one came on to the property either. After three weeks, Jack ventured into town to find that three families in the area had been decimated by the disease, but the threat was past them. The family was saddened to learn that their closest neighbors had been hit hard by the disease, and, out of seven family members, just two of the children survived--9 year old Stephen Adams and 7 year old Elisabeth Adams. Jack and Marie decided to take them in rather than let them be split up by the government foster care system.

Charlie and Mabel have Barbara.
The last five years have fortunately been not as eventful as the years between 1910 and 1915.
Charlie Washington is now a young man and goes college. He wants to attend medical school once he receives his bachelor degree. Charlie met a young woman named Mabel Bishop on campus. They began dating and married in October 1919. They welcomed their first child, a healthy baby girl, in February 1920. They named her Barbara Joan Washington, and no, she was not premature…!
Charlie and Mabel love their baby daughter, but they don’t want to have any more children before Charlie has finished his education. Mabel discontinued her education to stay at home with Barbara. They live in a small townhouse in the college town. Arthur and Edith bought the house as a wedding gift for Charlie and Mabel. Edward is also attending college, but not the same one as Charlie. He still secretly wants to become a painter, but is now pursuing a degree in art history. He is dating a young woman named Helen Manning, and although she would like to be married Edward is not too keen on the idea of marriage just yet…

David began regretting all the war stories he had told his son in his youth, as James was positively clamoring to get in on the action. Thus in 1917, James left his family and shipped off to battle. While in stationed in France, James was severely injured and sent to the hospital. There met a nurse named Mathilde Perreault. The two bonded as James recuperated from his injuries, and they fell deeply in love after only weeks of knowing each other. When James was fully recovered, he was sent back into combat. He never expected to see Mathilde again, but nonetheless he returned to look for her once the armistice was signed in November 1918. He did succeed in finding her, but to his utter surprise, she was six months pregnant with his child. Their son, Jacob, was born a few weeks after James brought Mathilde back to England and married her. Since then, the two have welcomed another son, Nathaniel.Eva, meanwhile, has gotten engaged to an American businessman named Allen Tremblay. After the wedding, they intend to move to New York, which David and Nora strongly oppose.
