Much to the relief of almost the whole of the Kingdom, Queen Felipa announced that she was pregnant just as the twins were celebrating their 8th moon. A week before the celebration of Princess Pasqualina's and Princess Daciana's first year Pippa went into early labor. The matron-priestess of Mother-Cardea could do nothing to stop the labor, and it soon became apparent that they could do nothing to help move the labor along also. Night turned to day and day turned to night... Pippa labored for almost 4 days before finally giving birth to a single son.
While the child was born healthy, the same could not be said of Pippa. Because Pippa did not have sufficient time to recover from the previous pregnancy, her body went into early labor. However, because the labor was early, her body also did all it could to prevent it and protect the baby. Her body was literally battling itself as she labored those four days and nights. It turned out to be too much for the Queen, and she slipped into a coma just as her son arrived into the world.
Luckily, Pippa came out of the coma as the sun rose, with her son just hours old. She was much pampered and made to rest. Dion was given to a wet nurse, and Pippa could only offer minor protest. However, it was this very event that started Pippa's depression. She felt a failure as a mother, unable to nurse her son and not able to completely nurse her daughters. She felt a failure as a Queen, having almost died to produce an heir "suitable". Her depression made her health worse... and as her health got worse, her depression deepened. And so she spiraled downward.
Ten was beside himself with worry over his Queen. Anything and everything that could be done was ordered done. Basi, Pax, Dachy and Dion were only allowed brief moments with their mother. Ten tried to be with her as much as possible, but the Kingdom was on the verge of war and he had his hands full trying to avoid that. Wulf sat with her frequently, and even arranged for the kids to play in her Solar as he watched. The Kingdom of Elsey was filled with dread and worry...
