Britt's Once-Upon-a-Time Congrats
Britt’s Once-Upon-a-Time Congrats
As you could probably guess by the title, this congrats will be based on fairy- and folktales. Choose your favorite traditional tale, be it fairytale, folktale, legend, epic—anything that has been told for centuries and can begin "Once upon a time." They can be from anywhere, and you can adapt the name language to fit your style (i.e. a Grimm fairytale with Russian names or a Perrault tale with African ones) since most traditional tales tend to have a version in just about every part of the world anyway. If you choose something obscure, please provide the backstory or a link to the version you use, just so I can follow what’s going on. It MUST end with a marriage or the promise of a marriage. You may need to look up the original version of the story to make sure it really ends with a couple and not rely on modern retellings or movie versions as a lot of these have totally different endings (such as almost all Little Mermaid retellings).
If there are a lot of traditional versions of your story, pick your favorite, and you can certainly mix-and-match versions and play with the story to fit your fancy. Since our game will pick up after some time has passed, get as creative as you want with the in-between and go wherever you want with the story as it goes on. If you have any questions, just ask and I’ll answer as quickly as possible. I will give very generic prompts, and feel free to run wild with them. I encourage it!
Rules
1. Three missed rounds period will result in dropping unless you inform me that you will be missing rounds.
2. Please keep up with ages. I have never once NOT messed at least one character’s age up when trying to keep up with everyone, so this time it’s your responsibility :P. I’ll let you know how many years have passed with each round and probably provide some sort of list of what ages should be.
3. Stories are a big part of this game, so if you aren’t the type who likes to add stories to your families, then this probably isn’t the game for you.
General note: this round I won’t be randomizing children. Some rounds I’ll give everyone the same gender child and others I’ll have an if/then choice or a die-roll/pick-a-number. Some rounds there will be the option for twins, but no higher multiples than that.
Titles are up to you. If your couple isn’t royal or noble, then put something to the effect of goodman/goodwife or citizen/citizeness.
So, enough of my babble. To quote a favorite movie of mine, “Get on with it!”

King: Robert Lucian III (28)
Queen: Rosabel (18)
(The queen has no middle name since she was born as a commoner and commoners did not typically have more than one name).
Tale: Rumpelstiltskin
There's not too many variations of the Rumpelstiltskin tale, but of course I'm going to expand on the events that happen at the end. ;) I'm also making up the name of the kingdom because I want wide range of freedom for my name choices.
Rosabel was born to a miller. Her father, eager to gain attention to himself, lied about how his daughter could spin straw into gold. Word of this reached the king, and he locked her into a room, threatening to execute her in three days if she could not. She despaired of her situation, but then a small gnomish creature appeared and offered to do it for her. First he did so in exchange for her necklace, then in exchange for her ring, and then finally on the third day when she had nothing else to give him, he made her promise to give her firstborn child to him.
The king was duly impressed and married her, and they were overjoyed to welcome their first child into their family. Then Rumpelstiltskin showed up and demanded the baby, but she begged him to reconsider. He told her she has three days to guess his name, and if successful, he'll forget the deal. Fortunately for the queen, a messenger of hers found Rumpelstiltskin's mountain home and overheard him singing about how he'll have the King's child because she won't be able to guess that his name is Rumpelstiltskin. The messenger relayed this information to the queen, and when she correctly guessed his name, he's so mad that he ended up tearing himself into half.
The queen so relieved he is gone! Fortunately for now, the king is plenty rich now and doesn't desire for his wife to do anymore weaving as that is not work fitting for queen, so he does not know about the miller's deception. She worries that if were to find out, he'd be angry and exile her or worse.
King Robert is not a kindly king; he is a very strict and harsh ruler of Camoria and is greedily eying the neighboring kingdom of Sunith, contemplating an invasion. Rosabel worries that he may at some point wish for her spin gold if the upcoming invasion is costly but hopes it won't come to that. For now she tries to focus on being a loving mother to her new baby.

Note
You forgot the ages. Otherwise, interested to see how a marriage with a man who would kill her for not spinning gold will work out. I'll assume said baby Rumplestiltskin wants is the baby for round one and will be named there?

I find ages to be a hassle, so I don't usually like to bother with them, but since there will be writing for this one, I'll go ahead and edit my post and add them. Yes, I assumed the baby Rumpelstiltskin wanted would be the one from the first round, and I'll name it then.

Tale: The White Wolf (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/eastsunwestmoon/stories/whitewolf.html)
The Sort-of Abbreviated Version
Once upon a time, there was a king who had three beautiful daughters. He loved them dearly, and they loved him in return. One day, the king went forth on a journey to a distant part of the kingdom. His youngest daughter, Ariadne, asked that he would not bring her any presents, but for a wreath of flowers. When the time came for the king to return, he searched and searched, but he could not find such a wreath. Saddened, the king decided to return back home without his daughter's wish.
On his way back to the castle, the king passed through a forest. But while he was riding withing the forest, he saw a white wolf sitting near the pathway - and there was a wreath of wild flowers on his head! The king quickly sent his men to retrieve the wreath, but to their surprise, the wolf opened his mouth and talked! The wolf said that he would gladly give the king his wreath, but only if the king sends back the first living thing he would encounter on the way back home. The king, thinking that he should certainly meet some wild animal in the forest, agreed to the deal.
To the king's surprise, all throughout his journey, not a living creature was to be seen. At last, he reached his castle. The gates flung open, and Ariadne ran to him and embraced him. The king was torn apart, and began weeping. He explained to his daughter about the promise he made to the wolf. Ariadne was surprised, but decided that promises must be kept. At first, the king tried sending a decoy to the white wolf, but the wolf returned, demanding the real princess, having deduced that the one sent to him was a fake. Ariadne mustered her courage and, after saying her good-byes, left riding on the wolf's back.

Tale: Briar Rose (Brothers Grimm)
Once upon a time in a far off country in the days of the fairies there lived a king and queen. The king and queen had everything they could wish for except for one thing.. a child. One day the queen came across a little fish by the side of the river, the queen took pity on the little fish and threw in back into the river. Before swimming away the fish said to the queen ’I know what your wish is, and it shall be fulfilled, in return for your kindness to me–you will soon have a daughter.’
This soon came to pass, the little girl was so beautiful the king could not cease looking on it with joy, he decided to hold a great feast and show the child to all the land. The queen invited the fairies to come however there were 13 fairies and the king and queen had only 12 golden dishes for them to eat out of, they were forced to leave out one of the fairies. The twelve fairies came and gave the little princess all their best gifts. Just as eleven of them had done blessing the tiny princess, the thirteenth fairy had arrived, she was very angry at not being invited and she cursed the little princess that on her fifteenth year she would be wounded by a spindle and die. The twelfth fairy came forward and as her wish she said the evil wish must be fulfilled but she could soften it, she said when the princess wounded her finger she would not really die but fall asleep for a hundred years.
The king ordered all the spindles in the kingdom to be destroyed.
On the very day Briar Rose was fifteen, the king and queen were not at home and she was left alone in the palace. She looked in all the rooms and chambers till at last she came to an old tower she went up the tower and there sat an old lady spinning away busily. Briar Rose asked what the old lady was doing and the lady replied 'Spinning' The princess took the spindle and began to try to spin. She had scarcely touched it when the prophecy was fulfilled she fell to the ground lifeless.

Gwyneira is the daughter of a king. Emrys is the son of a neighboring king. When Gwyneira was three years old, her mother passed away. When she was seven, her father married another woman, Disgleirio, who was cruel to her. Disgleirio was haughty, vain, and cruel. She thought that she was the most gorgeous woman in the whole world. When Gwyneira was seventeen, Disgleirio asked herself who the most beautiful woman in the kingdom was. Instead of the usual response her mind fed her, it whispered, "Gwyneira is quite the gorgeous young lady, Disgleirio. She's grown more so every day. She's come to surpass your own beauty." Disgleirio was angry with this, and she banished her own step-daughter into the woods, where all the bandits and robbers roam.
Gwyneira lived there in harmony with her new friends, the seven dwarves with whom she lived. When she was twenty-one, four years after she was banished, Disgleirio finally got her revenge. She was killed by a poison apple she was given by an elderly woman in the market place in the nearby town of another kingdom. This elderly woman was Disgleirio.
The seven dwarves grieve the death of their good friend Gwyneira. This was when Emrys came riding up. He, too, was a friend of the dwarves. When he saw the beautiful young woman lying in the casket, as still as the night, he jumped off his horse, ran to her, and, believing in the stories his mother told him, kissed the young woman on her lips. The kiss aroused her, and a year later they were happily wedded.
