It is generally accepted that the name Laodice means "justice of the people." I'd like to know more about the historical origin of this name. When I first read what the name Laodice meant, it struck me as being a very unusual name. It made a little more sense when I read that "Laodice was a common name among the ladies of the royal house of the Selencidae." (For instance, the first wife of the Seleucid King Antiochus II was named Laodice). What did "justice of the people" mean socially and politically as a name for a queen in the 3rd century BC? What did the name Laodice mean in ancient Greece generally?
