Ask Ivayla: still about the name "Irina"
Hi Ivayla:
You side the American way of pronouncing the name "Irina" is ay-Ree-na. Do you mean the sound "ay" is the same with the word "bite" or the word "cane"?
Thanks

Ivayla the Great is your most reliable source by far, but if you think about the way people pronounce the more usual name Irene, then presumably they'd use that initial sound (i as in bite) for Irina as well. I would be amazed at Ayrina as in cane, doesn't make phonetic sense, but I've been amazed before.
I think she means "eye" not "ay"
Yes, I meant ay- as in bite (or Irene)
Irina is pronounced I-ree-na. It would would like the "i" from bite.
