Didn't think anything could make Lexus & Porsche sound upmarket, but Subaru and Camaro are having a very good try.
Yay Humphrey, and nice to see Llewellyn & Taliesin! - although judging by the comments on Taliesin, they might well be Lou Ellen and Taluhsin.

TaliesinGood friends of ours had a baby boy yesterday and named him Taliesin... I'm very curious to start hearing their experience with that name!
vote up1
Wow! Great to see it used, I've always liked it. There aren't many of them about, even in Wales. I expect people will get used to it, it's certainly no harder to say than some of the others on this list. And Tal is a nice user-friendly nn.
vote up1
Yeah, that will be a tough one for many people, pronunciation-wise. I wonder if he'll ever be called Tally? I kind of like Tally as a NN (perhaps influenced by my hometown, Tallahassee?).
vote up1
TalesAt least as of a few months ago that's what they were planning on calling him. I think Tal/Tally will come out more easily though, so we'll see.

Some comments:Amadea - this is nice
Amandine - I know it means something like "made with almonds", but I still think it's cute. I also like Mandaline
Aurore - beautiful
Australia - meh
Cassiopeia - beautiful, but maybe not practical
Chardonnay - nice sound, but a bit tacky
Christmas - I actually like it
Ebba - this is common here
Exodus - jeez
Frederica - since this is almost my name, I'll have to say I like it ;)
Gem - wouldn't work here; in Swedish it means "paper clip" (but then it sounds more like "game"). Rather nice in English, though
Happy - ick, dog's name
Hyacinth - love it
Kale - you eat it
Kinneret - nice
Magenta - cute
Mariposa - sweet
Nouf - what?
Pennylane - guess the parents already had a John, a Paul, a George and a Ringo, then?
Porsche - tacky
Rosary - actually cute
Rye - bread
Seraphim - prefer Seraphina
Shulamit - like it
Sierraleone - a country that used to be plagued by an atrocious war
Snowy - as much as I love snow names, this is too much of a pet name
Tuba - I think this is Turkish, actually
Albino - poor kid
Ante - not too uncommon here; it's a form of Anders
Arryn - parents like GoT...
Chaplin - was he born with a moustache?
Danger - silly
Edge - parents like U2
Elmo - a Muppet
Furious - jeez
Gin - *hiccup* cheersch!
Heinz - I know it's a real name, but I still think of ketchup
Inigo - love it
Rambo - silly
Saviour - eh...
Thelonius - love it
Tripper - makes me think of narcotics
Vasiliy - love it
Yahweh - I think many people will find this...um...blasphemous

TubaYes, it is Turkish, apparently! It's in the database. I'm a little disappointed, here I thought they were each daughters of major tuba enthusiasts... haha

When I told Kevin about the 5 Tubas born, he asked me if it was a name from an Indian language; he said he's heard of a Bollywood star named Tuba. Apparently Turkish! It is a little disappointing, although knowing quite a few tuba enthusiasts, I can tell you that I don't think any of them would name their daughter after their instrument!

Wow, thanks for combing through the 5s and picking these out. What a great list full of unexpected names. I might have to turn it into a name game on the other board. The ones that jumped out at me on my first pass through:Amadea Amandine Assyria Christmas Ebba Flower Gem Icy Major Nouf Oakland Reef Rosary Snowy Thessaly Thisbe Absalom Ante Apostolos Elmo Famous Greco Humphrey Icarus Juneau Red Sephiroth Temple WiseYves (on a girl) and Tripper are blowing my mind right now. 5 baby girls named Tuba? YES.(BTW, Kevin would not approve of that.)

Delighted to see Llewellyn and Taliesin. On the girl side, Claudine is a treat, likewise Shulamit, and Pennylane is ... memorable.I taught a lovely Apostolos once; he chose to go by Albert, presumably to temper the wind to the non-Greeks.Famous Furious Gatsby Gent sounds like a social worker's file.I hope little Albino isn't. And one also wonders if the dictionary meanings of Trillion, Kale, Tuba and Wraith make them advisable! There's also the Rocky Horror link with Magenta - not a role model here on Earth; and in the Douglas Adams Hitchhikers books there's a Trillian, appropriately female, who tweaked her ordinary name of Patricia McMillan when she went galactic. So I'd be surprised to meet a male Trillion.

I remember seeing the name Penny-Lane on an earlier episode of Toddlers and Tiaras...guess I'm alone in thinking it is adorable!

Kinga

I thought Ana Belen was just gorgeous, which is why I included it and not the other several double names. I actually thought mushing them into Anabelen, was awesome. I'd imagine you're right and that irl they are two seperate names.
vote up1
It's too close to Anne Boleyn for my tastes. An interesting person, yes, and one who achieved fame, which few do. On the other hand, she's a tragic figure seeing as how she lost her life because of a deliberate and horrid miscarriage of justice. Bad vibes. Don't like.
vote up1
I think it was mentioned before that SSA smushes double first names, which is why things like Ana Belen and King James are written as one word.
vote up1
Renley is actually a name that's been around for a while, technically it's Renly that's misspelled :P Though I'm sure some modern usage is influenced by GoT.

I like Briony and Eulalie.

All of them suck mud.
I'm going to bed, I can't face the world. lol

Aggie: Gaggy Aggie. Saggy Aggie.
Amandine: A nice way to serve green beans.
Assyria: Not a good idea to start a name with ass.
Brighten: New whitening toothpaste.
Bronte: Brontesaurus.
Camaro: Porntastic.
Caoilinn: I know it's Irish and probably pronounced like Kaylyn, but it looks ridiculous.
Chardonnay: I think this might have been the name of one of the hookers in "Ted" but no, now that I think, it was Sauvignon Blanc. IT's porntastic though.
Christmas: I knew a very nice sheepdog named this. She was born on Xmas day.
Copper: "Come get me, copper!"
Ebba: Ubby dubby talk.
Exodus: I know it's Biblical and yadda yadda yadda, but it's awful. It sounds like a laxative.
Fancy: Be nice to the gentlemen, Fancy, and they'll be nice to you.
Fergie: God awful.
Flower: Flora or Florence would have been so much nicer.
Happy: Not.
Icy: She's a snow queen.
Juneau: No, I don't know.
Kale: And her brothers Collard and Spinach.
Knowledge: I read once about a woman who threw her two sons off a bridge. One of them was named Sincere Understanding, and the other was named Supreme Knowledge. I have a dim view of the mentality of somebody who names their kids Knowledge.
Lei: Lei, Lady, Lei.
Magenta: Rocky Horror references are so lame.
Major: Major dumb.
Mariposa: This is actually very nice.
Nanette: No no, Nanette.
Nouf: Somebody getting hit in the stomach with a Nerf ball.
Pennylane: Idiot.
Porsche: Porntastic.
Reef: Dumb.
Rosary: I bet anything they aren't even Catholic.
Rye: Hope she meets a boy named Ham so we can have Ham on Rye.
Seraphim: Plurals do not make good names.
Shiny: These people should be sterilized and possibly confined for their own protection.
Shy: And her brother Bashful.
Sierraleone: I admit that Sierra Leone is an attractive sound, but that doesn't mean it's a good name.
Snowy: Laundry product.
Stellar: Less than.
Success: Guaranteed to be a failure.
Sunniva: I know people on here like it but it always sounded like a name for a sports car or SUV.
Sunset: Porntastic.

*chanting* Share the worst! Share the worst! :PAggie: I will admit to liking Iggy as a nn for Ignatius for a character but can't get behind Aggie.Amadea: Not terrible if you could overlook the horrific Madea movie connection.Assyria: Ass is just not a good thing to have in your name.Aurore: The boring version of Aurora!Coda: I could see this being cool in a sci-fi maybe. Exodus: I think they aren't very acquainted with this word.Fancy: Like the song where she's a prostitute? Classy.Hyacinth: This would make a cool mn if the fn was proper and stuffy.Juneau: I like this. :)Kismet: I like this, too. Not enough to use it in a story.Larue: As in 'the street'? What a romantic name.Magenta: I actually like this one, too.Mariposa: The right girl could make this beautiful.Onora: Hm. I can see the appeal but it looks clinical to me.Pennylane: Adorable and horrible at the same time. Penny Lane from Almost Famous, anyone?Rosary: I do like the sound of this but it's just too religious.Seraphim: Hey, if Seraphine is okay...Shiny: I only hear Jayne.Shy: I like the sound of Shy but it just sucks as a name.Sierraleone: What is this ugliness?!Snowy: I'll admit to liking Snow as a name. Snowy? Nah.Thessaly: I love Thessaly!Thisbe: I love Thisbe!Zeppelin: "This is my son Aeroplayne and this is my daughter Zeppie. We drive everywhere because if God wanted us to fly, he would have given us wings."Albino: WHAT NO WHY OH GOD NOArryn: This is a Game of Thrones name, yes?Athens: I can see it.Bison: If he smells bad... just... oh, poor boy.Connery: What's wrong with Connor?

I thought the same about Wraith... I mean... ugh. Actually my first thought was they must be super goth people.Taliesin... my husband's best friend is naming his son this. His son should be born by now, in fact. Mom was being induced this morning!
vote up1
I figured Goth or Metal. I just knew a lot of spiked jewelry and eyeliner was probably involved.Well that's one Taliesin for 2014! I actually kind of like it, even if it kind of looks like tail spin.

I know it's completely irrelevant given that the kid is most likely an American growing up in America and all, but the name that caught my eye was Tripper because... well, in my mother tongue, "Tripper" is the word for "clap", as in gonorrhea. Good times.(I should go to bed ;) )

lolIt's better here, but still awful.

Please do share the worst of them too! :)I like:
Amadea - I think it's very pretty. I kind of love it. I can see myself use it in real life.

Ebba
Flower - I like it as a middle name
Juneau - GP but for a boy

If these are the best, I'd hate to see the worst. They are mostly ridiculous or horrible and I'm glad that no more than 5 babies born last year were given these names. The only one I like is Eugenie---that deserves to be much more popular. Yves for a girl in particular stands out, as it's a French male name. What kind of idiot uses Yves for a girl instead of Eve?
vote up1
I wonder if they named their girls after Yves Saint Laurent, the way some name their daughters Chanel?
vote up1
Indeed. Thus best being in quotation marks. ;)There were several wrong-gender names listed. The more popular ones I assumed were clerical errors. Yves I put in there since I found it interesting that it was given to girls, being that it is pronounced the same as Eve.
