Re: Meaning of name 'Saanvi' & 'Sanvi'
Could you provide any reference? I cannot recall having ever heard it, and I can't think of an obvious etymology either. (Maybe I am not getting the right spelling in Indic scripts ...)

well i found the name on india parenting site (http://www.indiaparenting.com/names/names1.cgi?param1=girl¶m3=kumbh¶m2=hindu.) Site says Saanvi means Goddess Lakshmi* but i want to double check before going for this name. I think in Urdu Saanvi means 'secondary' not sure what it means in hindi or sanskrit. Some site says Anvi in sanskrit means Some Devi, but didnt find any ref. in sanskrit dictionary. (http://babynames.indastro.com/Suggested%20HinduthreefA.html)any help is appriciated.

Hebrew?Beware of baby name sites! They are not useless since they do get the meanings correct better than a monkey typing at random would produce, and they provide interesting data on the creative nature of the human psyche; they cannot, however, be used to get etymologies reliably.I would definitely not recommend the first of those sites (their awards notwithstanding): some of the meanings are clearly made up, and most are not etymological meanings. In many cases I could not guess where they got the meaning from. Incidentally, the words are sometimes not of Sanskrit origin, but neither are they claimed to be. The quality and quantity of incorrectness does not differ substantially between the meanings marked `user contributed' and the others. The second site was more difficult to judge (because so many pages are without meanings), but I would not trust it to provide any etymology either. The phrase `name of Devi' usually refers to name of shakti in one of her forms (kAlikA, durgA, etc.) but I do not know Anvi in that sense. The best I can do is suggest you look up the Lilith story (see, for example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senoy). The basic concept of Lilith probably goes back to Sumerian, but the relevant part is probably old Jewish folklore, but I do not know how old. Since there are many Hebrew experts on this site, they may be able to help you.Since Urdu has borrowed heavily from Arabic, a semitic language, it might also be related, but I do not know Urdu.
