The use of Artemis as a male name may well come from confusing it with the similar name Artemas, the name of a male companion of the Apostle Paul mentioned in the Book of Titus in the New Testament:

According to tradition the Artemas mentioned in Titus later went on to become bishop of the city of Lystra in Asia Minor. (There were also other early Christian saints named Artemas.)
