Collected the -ing names everyone suggested - WDYT?
I would have posted this list last night, but we had a thunderstorm and power outage. There were a great many wonderful suggestions made, and I wanted everyone to see. The other post is pretty far down now, so here ya go.First off, there was discussion of a number of -ing names that are not verbs. Some of them are nouns, some are surnames or other proper names, whether actually in use or only discussed here. These are:Aisling
Browning
Channing
Gamling (Tolkien Dwarvish)
Harding
Irving
Kipling
King
Manning
Spring
Starling
Sterling
Yearling
Then there are all the present-participle verbs that were suggested. I'm including some I thought of as I was compiling everyone else's, and these new ones of mine are marked with an *. There is at least one name for every letter of the alphabet except X and O. I don't know of any verbs beginning with X. O needs a whole discussion on its own, which we'll have after the list.Heightening the cool factor on some of these names is the fact that some are both verb and noun, like Painting for example. Also enhancing their actual usability, imo, is the fact that some of them strongly resemble real names already in use, like Christening for example.Okay, ready? Go!Amazing

My favorites, the ones I really like and think could be real names in actual use, are Blessing, Christening (Christian / Christine), Lacing (noun and verb, sounds like Lacy), Lancing (like Lancelot, which I have always loved), Quilling (most Q names are just quirky enough anyway that this could blend right in), and Willing (like William / Willem). Plus, of course, the three that got me started thinking about all this, Hawking, Dashing and Soaring. So, about the lack of O names. All the O verbs I can think of have questionable meanings, that I would not want to saddle a kid with (although that's true of a few of the suggestions above as well). No one suggested any O names, and of the ones I could think of, I didn't want to include any. Tell me what you think of any of these, or can you think of others?Obeying
Obliging
Offing
Ogling
Oiling
Omitting
Opening
Opposing
Ordering
Owning:-)
ETA the comment about Lancing, which I forgot initially

Great list! The only "O" one that I can think of that doesn't sound too silly (to me, anyway - I came up with Ogling and Obliterating, but I think that they are entirely unusable, even in a theoretical sense!) is Orbing. Can't think of any X's though!Check Out Blinkyou.com for thousands of custom glitters and layouts

I like...
Arching - could be called Archie
Christening - it's enough like the other Chris- names that it fits in
Courting - reminds me of Courtney, but I like Courting much better
Hawking - very cool
Lancing - I think it sounds "right" because it's also the name (but different spelling) of a the capital of Michigan, but I like it because of it's similarity to Lance/Lancelot
Quilling - Quill would be a fabulous nickname, tooAs for O names...
Oweing
Oozing
Oaring
Occuring
OptingAlso, how about Belling?·•·Eliza·•·

A Few MoreI like (I'm marking with G or B which gender I prefer for it):
Irving (B)
Spring (G)
Starling (G)
Sterling (B)Brightening (B) This is the first one I thought of, myself.
Christening (B) I'd love this enough to use it if it weren't an actual word.
Dashing (B)
Dawning (G)
Enduring (G/B)
Heartening (G/B)
Lancing (B) Much better than Lance!
Meriting (G)
Quilling (B) Again, if this weren't an actual word...
Rhyming (G) I can't say I really like this, but I do love Rhyme.
Whirling (B)Wow... -ing words start to look reeeally weird after you look at them for a while.I didn't see the original post for this, so I'll add a few of my own:
Sharing
Glistening
Travelling
Pondering
Inspiring
Imagining
Pinking
Admiring
Flowering
Rejoicing"O" words:

Interesting collection!I love:
Aisling - This will likely be my girls name. Provided I have another of course.
Sterling - I grew up with a boy by this name. I always thought it was cool, but a little to English for my family =(
King - very cool, but maybe a little presumptuous for me.of the next set, I like:
Dawning
Hawking
But most of these are just too wordy for me. They are so descriptive that I find myself classifying the name bearer into preconceived categories of characterization. Which as a rule I try NOT to do, with any information about someone. ie. Their job, socio-economic class etc.If I had to pick the worst (just for fun), I'd say Offing. Which makes me think of a serial killer =(

Offing is definitely awful - reminds me of offal, actuallyNot a good name for a person!~Lillian~

WOW...Do people actually use these as names? Painting? Obeying? Yearning made me laugh, as did Zooming. =)-the warrior girl and her dragon lover-

This list was the result of a discussionmuch farther down the board about verb names. No, I don't know anyone named Painting, and Obeying, as I clearly indicated, does not sound like a good idea to me. I don't know that Yearning was intended to make you laugh, though I certainly understand Zooming sounding funny. On the other hand, I take Hawking quite seriously (it is a surname). I find a few of the others very plausible and might use one myself - if I were having more kids. This was the original discussion.http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=601588&board=baby~Lillian~
