Meaning & History
From Rotuma, an island of Polynesian people, close to 400km north of Fiji.
A Rotuman version of the name George. Use of the name in the Polynesian language of Rotuma began with the arrival of white seafarers who carried the name George, including knowledge of King George of England. Many other Western names that were introduced to the the Rotuman people through contact with white settlers became acceptable as Rotuman names also. The spelling and pronounciations of the names varied according to the existing pronounciation of the names in accordance with local language systems. Since the Rotuman race did not have a strong "G" sound they used the next available sound closest to it, a softer "g" sound, which is pronounced like the "ch" in the English word "church".
