Meaning & History
From the name of the Shalamar Gardens near what is now Lahore, Pakistan, which were created in the mid-17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (who also built the Taj Mahal). It might be derived from Arabic shah al-‘imarat meaning "master of buildings". This spelling of the name is sometimes given in reference to the Guerlain perfume called Shalimar, which was first introduced in 1921 and was named after the famous Mughal gardens. This was also used for the titular Egyptian princess (played by actress Debra Paget) in the 1954 movie Princess of the Nile.
