Meaning & History
Derived from Old Javanese barwaṅ meaning "bear". In Balinese mythology this is the name of a lion or panther-like creature who embodies goodness, health and prosperity. Described as a benevolent guardian spirit who opposes the forces of evil, he is the archenemy of the demon queen Rangda. He is also the namesake of a form of traditional Balinese dance, which depicts his eternal battle with Rangda.
